*Maja! The Forgotten Woman...
I was inspired to write this musical drama out of my love for and devotion to Spanish music and culture during a 40-year career. A three-way fascination evolved: That of Goya for the 19th century picaresque lower middle class majos and majas spoken about in the lyrics by Fernando Periquet of Granados’ passionate and humorous songs; that of Granados, fascinated with every aspect of Goya’s life inspiring him to compose Coleccion de tonadillas sung in this drama along with an aria from his opera, Goyescas, and piano pieces in homage to Goya; and, lastly, my fascination with and admiration of them both.
MAJA! is a fusion of music, theatre, history, poetry, dance, painting and the colorful and multi-faceted character of the Spanish people, including the origin of majismo/machismo still in existence in Spain and Latin America. Love and hate/amor y odio, timeless and universal emotions in amatory relationships, is the main theme of the drama. Enhanced by backdrop of a famous Goya painting and authentic Spanish and modern dances, Maja! is, literally, a work of art worthy of funding.
