Eric is sitting by the dining table with his breakfast. A door opens behind him at the end of a corridor. A woman walks in. She puts her coat on and walks over to Eric. She looks deep into his eyes and says "I love you". She walks to the front door, puts her shoes on, opens the door and looks at Eric. He wants to stop her but he cannot do anything. She leaves.
Silence.
Quietly the sound of sirens fade in. It becomes louder and louder. Someone knocks on the door. Everything turns pitch black. We hear the door open and a voice from outside: ”There’s been an accident.”
Eric wakes up. He finds his distant father Bernard sitting on the sofa. Eric has not seen him for twelve years. He wants to go but his father says: ”You can't leave. A storm is coming… That's why I'm here.”
As Eric is trying to puzzle the pieces together, he can feel that the woman has the answer. He needs to go back to sleep to find her.
The film Somnolence takes part in two separate worlds: - One where Eric is sheltered with his father and the other, where he gets closer and closer to a woman. Almost as a detective, Eric moves between the worlds to find out the truth about the storm and the accident. As the story progresses Eric starts to question the reality.
