Short Summary

Sowing the Seeds of Love is a short film split into three 5-minute chapters about quirky animal sex hosted by Hulk Hogan, Joyce DeWitt, and Robert Picardo in individual segments. The episodes are shot in accordance with what that celebrity is known for, tying in nostalgia with the obscure sex lives of animals. The purpose of this series is to get audiences to think about not only sexuality of animals, but the different sexualities of our society and try to normalize the ideas of expanding change and acceptance.

Sowing the Seeds of Love explores the obscure and peculiar sex lives of animals through the eyes of Hulk Hogan (1980’s WWE wrestler icon), Joyce DeWitt (Janet Wood from the popular 1970’s sitcom Three’s Company), and Robert Picardo (known for his character as the holographic doctor on the 1990’s Star Trek Voyager series). This three 5-minute chapter short film combines nostalgia, comedy, animation, and quirkiness to attract a wide variety of audiences. These popular celebrities from the 70s, 80s and 90s, still have an audience and prevalent following. Their role is to satire their popularity to make the subject of animal sexuality more digestible to audiences without a science background.

Episode One involves Hulk Hogan discussing the mating rituals of flatworms and their spear-like forked penises used to stab each other to obtain dominance in what sexual role they play in reproduction. The episode is filmed like a 1980s wrestling commercial to amplify the nostalgia of what audiences identify as Hulk Hogan’s career. Animation is used to show the actions of the animals’ mating rituals. This episode captures Hulk Hogan’s initial humorous shocked reactions to the unconventional sex acts of flatworms, adding an element of relatability to the viewers.

Episode Two features Joyce DeWitt from the 1970’s sitcom Three’s Company. DeWitt will explain the sex lives of wolf spiders, and again will capture her humorous reactions. The female Wolf Spider has a paired reproductive organ allowing two male spiders to mate with her at the same time, resulting in a threesome. This episode is shot like a sitcom containing humor, laugh tracks and sexual innuendos influenced by the show Three’s Company. Filming her reactions of the spider’s copulation brings an added element of comedy relief. She is known to be quite afraid of spiders which I’m sure many viewers may identify with and may also suffer from arachnophobia. This will bring an awareness to the interesting aspects of spiders which will hopefully make people think twice about their fears.

Episode Three showcases Robert Picardo from the 1990’s Star Trek Voyager talking about and reacting to the reproduction of anglerfish found in the deep ocean. Male anglerfish are significantly smaller than the females and will attach themselves to the female’s body acting like a parasite until the female is ready to reproduce. The male presents the sperm to fertilize the eggs before it dies. This episode is shot referencing Star Trek using the deep ocean as the final frontier.

These three decades -the 70s, 80s and 90s - are not only nostalgic for baby boomers but are relevant today for younger generations. The WWE, Three’s Company and Star Trek are still in play as reruns and are iconic in pop culture. This film is made to target a wide range of audiences of not only fans of each celebrity, but also intrigued by the quirkiness of this series. It is designed to engage the viewers through different tropes and step away from traditional documentary styles.

The Budget

Because I am a student, all technical gear is provided to us for free. The funding of this film will help in the necessity of travel. I have a crew of two, traveling with gear to three different locations. We would love to use the tactile element of 16mm film to emphasize the feeling of nostalgia. For the use of 16mm, funding will be put into the purchase, process, and development of the actual rolls of film.

The Impact

Sowing the Seeds of Love covers topics of sexuality and pop culture bringing attention to the wonders of different animal mating rituals that are unfamiliar to most. It uses current and past pop culture to attract audiences via nostalgia and recognition. The topic of sexuality is very important and prominent in today’s culture, breaking the traditional views of gender and now embracing individuality. Animals have unconventional sexual encounters and sexuality compared to humans. This show will highlight the importance of unconventionality and bring normalcy to sexual fluidity and sexual identity using animals.

Flatworms are a species that can change gender. When it comes time for reproduction, two male Flatworms will battle until one Flatworm stabs the other, sometimes multiple times. The winner will remain male, and the loser is now the female for their copulation. This is an unconventional way of sex, although very normal for this species. This animal represents sexual fluidity in society. People also have the ability to identify as different genders.

Wolf spiders, like all spiders, have a reputation of being “scary.” I chose this animal to try to get audiences, who may be afraid of this animal, to think more deeply into the dynamics of this species. Wolf spiders also have an interesting reproductive habit of threesomes. The female Wolf Spider has a double reproductive system. One male will riskily court and try to mount the female for reproduction. When he succeeds, another male can join in and reproduce alongside the other male with that female. This results in a threesome. The second male avoids the risk of cannibalism and still gets to mate. This animal, because it showcases the normalcy of having multiple partners in the animal kingdom, supports the idea of normalcy in polyamorous relationships.  Human sexual relations with multiple partners are becoming more open as a topic in our society.

Anglerfish are another species that represent a change in social norms of our society. For reproduction, the male anglerfish will find a female in the dark depths of the deep ocean. Once he finds a female, he will attach himself to the female’s body like a parasite. He feeds off her nutrients to survive. Once she is ready for reproduction, the male will provide her with sperm. That is the only role of the male anglerfish. This species challenges our societal ideals of male and female roles. The female Anglerfish does all the work, supporting life to the male. In return, the only purpose of the male is to provide sperm. Challenging societal normality, women can and should embrace their voice and be viewed as equals within society.

Using iconic celebrities allows for a wide variety of audiences from different political and social backgrounds to watch an unconventional documentary with an underlying message of sexuality. The goal of this series is to engage viewers who may not traditionally watch nature documentaries by using different techniques such as humor, animation, nostalgia, obscureness, and celebrity recognition to share the informative details of the natural world.
