Bhavya Gohil and Aatur Mehta, the brains behind Square Off, first conceived this idea while working on a project in their engineering college. In the year 2013, the Chairperson of National Association of Blind (NAB) had got in touch with them to design a chessboard for the visually impaired as it’s not possible for them to play chess on computers and smartphones. The founders being board game lovers themselves, simply dived in to explore the possibilities. They researched tirelessly to finally arrive at a design and started participating in various technical paper presentations and national-level tech competitions to earn the prize money, just to create the prototype - which came out in 2014.

The Chairman of NAB who was visually impaired himself, tested the prototype and loved playing on it.

Towards the end of 2014, the founders got to showcase their prototype to an international audience at the Maker Fair, Rome. The overwhelming response received only boosted their confidence to connect the whole world through their project. They created 4 more prototypes and visited several events to get as much feedback as possible. The idea was to identify features that would really excite a chess player. From the very beginning, Atur & Bhavya were dedicated to bringing alive the features requested by the users.

After presenting their prototype in front of some of the world’s finest institutions and bodies like IITs in India, MIT Boston FAB 11, Startup Istanbul and the Sharjah Chess Club, finally the Beta product was ready in May 2016. Through the many successful presentations, the co-founders touched chord with some brilliant minds and decided to optimize the cost of their board to catalyze its affordability.
