Bringing better
healthcare to the people of Oyugis
Hearts for Kenya’s mission is to build self-sufficient
communities in Oyugis, Kenya through agricultural development and other
sustainable initiatives.
Over the past year, we’ve worked to turn a dilapidated
duplex into a much-needed medical clinic for the community. Built with local
materials by Kenyan workers and volunteers, the clinic has been designed to use
renewable sources of energy, including rainwater and solar power.
Slated to open in June 2014, the Mary Ballard Medical Clinic
will provide four exam rooms and a pharmacy, an administrative office, two
washrooms and a spacious waiting area for patients. A staff nurse will be
available three days a week with a conservative estimate of 60 patients seen
each day.
Not only will the clinic provide a source of income for
staff, it will also offer digital record-keeping for better diagnosis and
treatment of patients. This is a
life-changing benefit for the people of Oyugis.
Help us reach the
finish line!
While all major construction is complete and the building
has running water, there is still some work to be done. Two more water tanks
would ensure adequate water for the clinic. A septic system would allow the
washrooms and sinks in the exam rooms to be used properly. And two exam rooms
still lack cabinets and beds.
The cost to complete these remaining projects is $5,000.

Making a measurable
difference
For 20 years, Hearts for Kenya has been helping the people
of Oyugis, Kenya break the cycle of poverty and build a healthy,
self-sustaining community.
·
We support more than 150 farmers in our co-op,
providing supplies and educational programs that have helped them increase
their crop yields from an average of 300 lbs of corn per acre to 1,100 lbs.
·
We reach more than 8,000 students in 20 schools
where 7th and 8th grade students are taught how to farm and use their harvest
to give each of their fellow classmates what may be their only meal of the
day.
·
And now, we are increasing access to quality
medical care for the people of Oyugis through the Mary Ballard Medical Clinic.
This is critical to the sustained success of our efforts in the community.
