Our Organization
Operation ASHA is India’s largest NGO dedicated to eradicating tuberculosis (TB) worldwide and has been working in Cambodia since 2010.
The United Nations recognizes Operation ASHA among the top public-private partnerships in the world. The organization works closely with the Ministry of Health (Cambodia) in five Operating Districts (ODs) in Phnom Penh and Takeo.
In areas where we work (in Cambodia),
- We more than doubled TB case detection rates in 2012
- We found up to 100% of TB cases in our Operating Districts
- Our treatment default rate by patients is at a low rate of 2%
TB in Cambodia
In Cambodia, TB is the second
biggest cause of death and one of the most serious
public health challenges. The country
has one of the highest TB prevalence rate in the world (source:WHO). Each
TB patient infects, on average 12 others before dying. Therefore, it is all the
more critical that every patient is detected and fully treated as early as possible.
Our Model
(A) We provide Directly Observed Therapy Shortcourse (DOTS) and diagnostic services at patients’ door step - We engage mobile field supervisors who connect our patients to the health services they need.
(B) We support our patients through TB Treatment - Our emphasis
on high quality and repeated counselling of patients and families improves adherence
and treatment outcome. Field supervisors
are also trained to take care of simple side effects due to TB treatment with
over-the-counter drugs. Our field supervisors
also involve the family early in the process, to facilitate strong family
support throughout the treatment regime.
(C) We ensure DOTS is provided in accordance to National Tuberculosis Program guidelines - We engage independent auditors to do weekly random service audits and have strong processes to monitor outcomes and rectify lapses regularly.
(D) We guarantee data quality – We are able to measure, quantify and audit our data through the implementation of our biometrics system.
Our Patients' Voices
"I was sick for a long time until I met Operation ASHA's field supervisor. She took me to the hospital to confirm that I had TB and followed up with daily medication for my condition. Only after taking the medication, I became stronger.
I can now work to earn money and support my family like I used to. Without Operation ASHA, I won't be well today. My wish is for all TB patients to take their medication faithfully. Thank you Operation ASHA for saving my life."
"My name is Sothed and I am 14 years old. I live with my younger sister and grandmother. Everyday, I work in the rice fields so that I can earn money to buy food for the family.
My grandmother is sick with TB. I hope she will get better so that our family situation will improve. When I found out my grandmother had TB, I was scared it might spread to me. Now, I'm not afraid anymore because we have help from Operation ASHA."
