Suga manufactures premium quality yoga mats in the USA from 100% recycled wetsuits. The name Suga evokes the two worlds it straddles: surfing and yoga.
Suga was born out of necessity by a lifelong surfer and yoga practitioner who was seeking a solution to an enduring problem. While surfers enjoy a bond with the environment, we struggle to reduce our impact. Non-biodegradable neoprene wetsuits present a unique challenge. Suga worked extensively with engineering experts to recycle these petrochemical based landfill clogging neoprene monsters into highly functional instruments of yogic bliss.
Suga reengineered the traditional yoga mat to feel better and perform better, while solving a pressing environmental problem. Because Suga mats are manufactured from neoprene, they’re uniquely closed-cell foam, which means they don’t sponge up bacteria, sweat, dust, and dirt from yoga studio floors like other mats. Suga mats maintain their grippiness whether dry or wet. They also give non-biodegradable wetsuits a second life by keeping them out of landfills.
Suga is grounded in a culture of environmental stewardship. We seek to set an example of corporate sustainability and social responsibility. We engender these values by reducing the impact of neoprene wetsuits on our natural environment, creating a long-lasting product, and maintaining responsibility for the lifecycle of our products.
Our recycler/manufacturer is located here in United States and is ISO9001 certified. Our net energy consumption is considerably lower than producing conventional mats overseas from raw materials (like almost all existing mats). Finally, we reuse 100% of our scrap - any scrap cuttings from production go back into the grind for the next production round (along with worn out SugaMats in the future).
Suga has created a product using recycled materials that can and will be recycled at the end of its useful life. We have implemented two programs for our products, both of which allow our customers to return our used mats to us for recycling. We are also a proud member of 1% for the Planet.
