Sun Seeds are iridescent, geometric, hanging sculptures.
They're made from a dichroic material. They change color with the angle of the light and cast beautiful rainbow shadows and reflections!

We originally made the Sun Seeds for an outdoor art installation.

Now we're offering kits to make your own Sun Seeds!
The pieces interlock, hooking together without tape or glue.

We're producing the Sun Seed kits entirely in-house.
They make great gifts for anyone who enjoys crafting, rainbows, geometry, or 3D puzzles!
Every kit includes:
- Dichroic pieces for assembling the Sun Seed.
- Assembly instructions in diagram and video format.
- Cardstock practice kit for learning the basic technique.
- Nitrile gloves to keep the dichroic pieces pristine during assembly.
- Fishing line for hanging the Sun Seed. Sun Seeds are light weight and easy to hang off a hook, suction cup, or tree branch.

Hi!
We're Toby Schachman, Ryan Alexander, and Monique DeSalvo. We've been collaborating together on art installations and sculptures for several years.
![]()
We created the Sun Seeds last summer for an outdoor art installation.
![]()
We had set an intention to make a mobile of dichroic sculptures inspired by plant life.
We love making things with our hands and we're always excited to learn new techniques for making things, whether origami, sewing, blacksmithing, welding, or woodworking.
We were playing with a technique for making curved, interlocking polyhedra (inspiration: Yoshinobu Miyamoto, Holger Strøm) and discovered that by elaborating the hooks we could create curved forms both plant-like and geometric.
We made countless paper prototypes, experimenting with how far we could take the technique and what kinds of shapes we could make.
![]()
We even made custom software to help us design the pieces.
![]()
Our favorite part of the process was always taking the flat pieces, fresh out of the cutting machine, and interlocking them together, one by one, and seeing the curved, symmetric forms emerge.

We were delighted with the response to our art this past summer, and now we're excited to be producing the Sun Seeds as a kit, to share this experience with anyone who, like us, loves making things with their hands!
Risks and Challenges
We're producing the Sun Seed kits entirely in-house over November and aiming to get your kits delivered before December 15. Update: orders placed October 22 or later will be made in our second batch (estimated delivery date January 31).
We've timed how long it takes us to make the dichroic material and cut the pieces. We'll be monitoring this crowdfunding campaign closely and will stop taking new orders if we approach what we can confidently produce in time for December.
This is our first time running a crowdfunding campaign, and we've noticed these things can hit snags. We're hoping to avoid that by producing the kits ourselves and not depending on any third-party outsourcing. If we do hit any unforeseen obstacles, we promise to keep you updated and do our best to get you your Sun Seeds on time!
