Short Summary
Four Minutes.
I had no idea that it would only take four minutes to start a raging fire.
Three years ago, the Youtube algorithms recommended a four minute video to me at random. It was the story of a woman who had survived six years in the human sex trade industry. At the end of that four minutes - a fire had been lit.
For a year, that fire continued to grow inside. I studied the statistics, the effects, and how close to home the epidemic of human trafficking actually was. My research needed to be done in small increments of knowledge and facts because the subject was often too heavy. I had read many stories about "rescue" and busts that had occurred in my own city of Winnipeg. At the end of my reading, I was plagued by one question: what next? What happens next for the victims of these terrible crimes? The news had made it sound like they were free to live their own lives with no mention of post-traumatic disorders, rehabilitation, and how they were going to keep them safe. I thought to myself: You can't rescue somebody from being stranded in the ocean and drop them on a deserted island. I knew more needed to be said about life post-trafficking.
Every day with new information pouring in by the minute, I knew I had to do something. People needed to know how deeply rooted this problem is in our countries. It needed to be shouted from the rooftops but instead I did what I knew best - I wrote a screenplay. A story that continues when we stop reading.
A script written and rewritten at least a dozen times. The story continuously changing with every rewrite. Soon, I began to share my ideas and a small team formed behind the undeveloped script. Fast forward two years, "Sunrise" has finally come together.
