Memphissippi Sounds
On a hot summer night in 2017, the paths of two uniquely talented musicians crossed in a club on the world famous Beale Street. Called to perform on the same gig, Cameron Kimbrough, grandson of Mississippi blues legend Junior Kimbrough, combined his gritty vocals with the raw, stripped-down drum rhythms of his native hill country. Damion “Yella P” Pearson added the soulful sound of his blues harp. The end result was nothing less than musical magic.
Their chance encounter led to an instant connection, with Cam and Yella teaming up to form what would eventually be known as Memphissippi Sounds. Cam had grown up listening to the blues at his grandfather’s juke joint and later taught himself to play drums and guitar. Yella P, also self-taught on the harmonica, first picked up the instrument at age 13, honing his style while listening to the blues on Beale Street. Their custom blend of North Mississippi hill country blues & Memphis soul, blues, rock, pop, and hip-hop was debuted at the New Daisy while opening up for guitar legend Eric Gales. In the past year, they’ve taken the Memphissippi Sound on the road to places such as Thacker Mountain Radio Hour in Oxford, Clarksdale’s Juke Joint Festival, and Little Rock’s Whitewater Tavern, backing Grammy-nominated bluesman R.L. Boyce. Memphissippi Sounds has made local appearances at the Levitt Shell, Radio Memphis, and the Indie Memphis Film Festival. Between gigs, they can be heard busking on Beale Street, much like musicians did in the heyday of Memphis music.
