Short Summary

Nana Chatzi was born in Serres in 1943 and grew up in Thessaloniki.

In 1969, she immigrated to Germany and lived there for six years. During these years, Nana went on with her transition as there was more support and possibilities to help her accomplish this goal.

In 1975 Nana returns to Thessaloniki, Greece. Eventually, she became active amongst trans women and LGBT rights groups. Today, she is an active member of S.Y.D. (Greek Transgendered Association) and Homophonia (Thessaloniki’s Pride Festival). Up until this day, she still fights for LGBTQI rights.

In 2015 Nana was sadly diagnosed with two different types of lung cancer.

As a trans woman in current Greek society, she is struggling under the broken Department of Health. She receives the minimum monthly amount of social benefits from the Greek government.

With this campaign we want to raise funds to help Nana with her medical costs that involve chemotherapy, medication and daily home care. With your help, Nana can have good medical support and the personal care she really needs!

Who we are: We are a group of LGBTQI people from Greece who have come together in order to show solidarity to Nana and help her during this difficult time.

What We Need & What You Get

1800 euros for 5 hours daily care for three months (house and hospital) treatment.

600 euros for medical patches that reduce pain which will last for two months (not covered by health insurance)

600 euro for additional medical costs (bandages, mobility aids, complementary therapies)

In order to save extra costs, our unique perk is our eternal gratitude and love.

If the entire goal is not reached, the funds will cover Nana's most urgent needs, such as medicine and daily care.

    The Impact

Nana Hatzi has been an activist for LGBTQI rights since the 70's. She took part in panel discussions and workshops on trans rights, she has been a member of the human rights department of left wing organisations, participated in the first trans pageant in 1980 and co-organised the Thessaloniki Pride since 2012 as member of Homophonia.

Earlier this year, the feature documentary NANA by Lara Kristen was released, documenting her life story. The film is a way for us to learn herstory through storytelling, observation and archive material that shows trans issues and difficulties in Greek daily reality.

This campaign is the first greater attempt coming from the Greek LGBTQI community to support a single person in need. This has been a powerful and inspirational experience. With your help, we hope to contribute to this cause.

    Risks & Challenges

We are aware of the fact that many people from our LGBTQI community find themselves in precarious situations and with this campaign we hope to set the beginning for a greater international movement that raises awareness and supports more individuals and marginalised groups.

    Other Ways You Can Help

We understand that not everybody has the funds to support our campaign, but you can help us by sharing this on your social media and with your friends. You won't just be helping a person in need within a broken health system, but you will also be raising awareness on trans issues in the Greek daily reality.
