The Hamptons have long been associated as a playground of the rich and famous. There is actually much more to The Hamptons. There are traditions that date back to the mid 1600's. One of these traditions is inshore fishing.
As they continue to use the traditions taught to them by the Native American's, The Baymen find themselves locked in a battle for their very survival. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has had a moratorium on issuing Bass and Fluke licenses for the last two decades. Without issuing new licenses, the number of Baymen has been dwindling each year. Right now there are only about a dozen Baymen that continue to earn their living fishing.
This could very well be the end of the line for The Baymen of East Hampton, NY. This way of life that has existed for centuries is in danger of fading into a nostalgic memory.
The money raised here will go towards retaining a Federal Civil Right Attorney who will file a class action suit on their behalf. The hope here is to readdress the licensing process and allow this way of life and proud tradition to continue.
Please help keep this way of life continue.
