Save Malapascua!
Rebuilding a School and Health Clinic, Planting Trees, Installing Water Purifiers, and Delivering Christmas Presents
Malapascua was hit hard by Super Typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan. The former diving paradise was "leveled" as the Typhoon "did not spare anyone; all houses lost their roofs."
From December 14th - 18th, a small group of experienced international volunteers will be staying in Malapascua to aid in relief and reconstruction. We plan to rebuild a school and health clinic, install water purification systems, replant indigenous trees, develop a seaweed growing farm, and install tarpaulins for temporary shelters.
Our Team:
Jamie Ansorge, Co-Founder of International Youth Council
Esperanza Garcia, Founder of Philippine Youth Climate Movement
Krystal Laymon, Environmental Blogger with Hurricane Sandy rebuilding experience
Alex Abrahamson, Documentary Filmmaker
We are all young people looking to make a difference, and to put our organizing skills to good use. We're going to Malapascua hoping to leave the community better than when we found it, to provide relief and comfort, and to generate media attention and awareness for the continued suffering of the Philippine people. We are in direct contact with local leaders and development experts on the ground in Malapascua - this includes includes Sito Ugarte of Fun and Sun Travel Dive. Every penny we raise here will be spent in consultation with those who know best.
Will you support us?
What Malapascua Needs
Every penny that we raise here will go directly towards those suffering in Malapascua.
Here are the funding needs:
-
Tarpaulins and Rope (for use as temporary roofs): Many families still do not have roofs since Typhoon Haiyan hit a month ago. So far, we have over 30 tarpaulins to provide temporary roofs for 30 homes, we can contribute to more. One tarpaulin cost around $50.
- Toys for Children: There is a Christmas Party at the Local School on December 14th, but they do not have enough presents for the children in attendance. We're told they need books and games. There are 400 children at the local elementary school in Malapascua.
- Help a family (or a few) to rebuild their home: Materials to help rebuild a native house can cost between PHP 10,000 - 12,000 ($230 - 275) for a small family home. One roof is PHP2,000 ($45). There are 1,500 families on the island.
- Indigenous Tree Seedlings: Most trees have been destroyed in the storm. Let's help rebuild them again.
Please join the effort by contributing what you can and spreading the word! You can make a difference!
