About Us:

We at SURI Timepieces design high quality mechanical timepieces inspired by science. By pairing our passion of watches and science, we created a unique platform to raise awareness of certain diseases. Starting off with our Mito watch, we are raising awareness for mitochondrial disease.

The name Mito is derived from the cellular organelle found in our bodies - the mitochondrion. Mitochondria are the power houses of our bodies that utilize the glucose/sugars from our food and convert them into energy in order for us to function. Each cell in our body contains thousands of copies of mitochondrial DNA (the blueprint to create functional mitochondria). However, for every 1/4,000 people, a mutation within the mitochondrial DNA may arise, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction. Impairment of mitochondrial function results in several developmental disorders, muscle weakness/pain, and even organ failure. Simply put, without healthy mitochondria, we would cease to function.

By creating the Mito, we hope to spark public interest in what mitochondria are and the debilitating disease people have to live with. For every watch sold, a portion of the funds will go directly to foundations supporting mitochondrial research.

This watch isn't just a fashion piece, it's a support for a good cause!

The Design:

The inner bezel of the watch contains a unique twist – the mitochondrial DNA map (represented by small dashes around the perimeter of the dial). This map is the blueprint for the development of mitochondria in our bodies.

What makes us different than the rest:

Science + Watches = A Unique Inspiration

We wanted to create a watch with a story – something that can act as a conversation piece. The Mito has been designed and created to create awareness of mitochondrial disease.

In terms of the watch itself, we have spared no expense at providing you a watch with materials and features that many rivals don’t offer at this price point:

• domed sapphire crystal - usually an extra when it comes to watches, comes standard with the Mito. Sapphire crystal provides the maximum protection against scratches.
  
• anti-reflective (AR) coating - once again, usually an extra, is another standard feature on the Mito. AR coating means maximum clarity in all lighting conditions.
  
• 150 meter water resistance (WR) + screw-down crown - typical classically designed watches would come with a very low WR (< 50 meters). However, we wanted to make sure you could, for example, go for a swim with your Mito. Therefore, we have designed a case that is pressure tested to 150 meters. (Note: the crown [attached at 3 o'clock position used to adjust the time] must be pushed down closed to ensure water-tightness)  
  
• Miyota 9015 automatic movement - created by the world-renowned Japanese watch company Citizen, the Miyota 9015 has become a largely popular choice for automatic movements. The Miyota 9015 has been a tried-and-true competitor to the commonly used Swiss movements. An automatic movement means that this watch does not contain a battery. In fact, when worn, the action/movement of your wrist rotates a rotor that winds the watch. When fully wound, you can expect the watch to run for 48 hours if left off your wrist.
