Hello! We are folk duo Suthering.
We moved from Bristol to Devon in 2019, just before the pandemic hit, in a bid to create a life more connected to community and nature. These themes can be found woven into our music and in our band name which means "the sound of the wind through the trees or the sound of wind under a birds wing". Our songs tell stories and champion female characters, creating new narratives for women and unearthing the female heroines of folk.
Our music has a strong emphasis on close vocal harmonies with stripped back a cappella songs featuring in our live shows and recordings. We incorporate guitar, piano, flute and whistles to accompany our songs.
We've spent the last year and half creating our debut album If We Turn Away, which explores themes of community, connection, environment and conscience. It’s very much a reflection of the times we are living in and has been influenced by our experiences during the pandemic. We’ve put together ten carefully crafted songs to make this, our first studio album, something really special.
But we need your help to make it happen.
What We Need & What You Get
The album has already been recorded; we were lucky enough to work with Lukas Drinkwater who recorded and who we co-produced the album with, at his studio Polyphonic Recordings in Stroud.
Now, we're looking to find a further £5500 to fund the other essential aspects of releasing an album as independent artists.
The money we raise will pay for:
- CD artwork produced by a fantastic Devon-based artist
- Mastering
- CD Duplication
- PR costs
- Advertising
- Music video
- Photos
All ten tracks are already recorded and are currently being mixed. So we are half way there! But, we need your help to turn the recordings into a finished product which we can send out into the world.
Here you can pre-order the CD and find a selection of other rewards to help us fund this last leg of our album release, including house concerts and Grow Your Own Suthering seed packets!
Your pre-orders mean that we are able to properly fund the release of the album independently, without the backing of a label.
What if we don't make our target?
If we don't make our target, we'll still go forward - it just means that we'll have less to put towards the PR side of things.
If we go over our target, we will have a larger budget for each aspect of the release but especially to create more videos to accompany the album.
