Our Story
Hi, my name is Deke Wright and I am an Iraq war veteran that just recently started a BBQ sauce company with my father. Let me tell you a little about how this all started. Through the years of my childhood I was blessed to have a mother that loved to cook. One of those recipes that she enjoyed making for the family and many of the friends that begged for it was our "secret" family BBQ sauce recipe. This amazing recipe was handed down to her from her father. He made her promise to never give the recipe away and I made the same vow to my mother. Throughout the years we always wondered and pondered over the idea of making and bottling this product to sell publicly but never took that leap. In September of 2009, my mother went to the E.R. for an emergency appendectomy and was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. She began aggressive chemotherapy treatments and fought this cancer to the best of her ability. After only 3 months of fighting cancer she lost her battle on January 3, 2010. I have since then tried to start this company from the ground up in her memory. I plan on getting this BBQ sauce into retailers nationwide. We would also like to expand on our line of sauces and add some BBQ rubs. By doing so I also want to help raise money for the Colon Cancer Alliance and help fund my mother's memorial scholarship the Tina Wright Memorial Art Scholarship for Breckenridge, TX High School students that want to further their education in the field of Art.
The Impact
Our family had to learn about this cancer the hard way first hand. I want this cause to be heard nationwide. There are too many people out there that do not understand colon cancer and the steps to prevent it or survive it. You can help us in this fight and bring this to the national spotlight. Colon cancer is the second most deadly of all cancers. Colon and rectal cancer took the lives of 268,783 people between 2003 and 2007. According to the Mayo Clinic, colorectal cancer was expected to kill more than 51,000 people in 2010. My mother was one of those people. When we reach our goal I will be able to reach out to more retailers and distributors. This money will also help with my marketing and advertisement funds (as of now I am under capitalized). With my sauce making it into more stores around Texas and hopefully nationwide. Someday, I will be able to donate more and more of my profit to the Colon Cancer Alliance. I have been working with the CCA in the design of my label by adding their logo to it. I will also be able to raise the scholarship total and be able to hand out more than one scholarship yearly. By reaching this goal I will be able to expand my customer base and help bring awareness to this preventable, treatable and beatable cancer. With your help we can do this!
What We Need & What You Get
I am asking for $15,000 to help bring this company's nose above water. I was under capitalized to begin with and this money will be used towards getting an E-Commerce website designed and launched. I will also be able to get product pictures taken professionally and ads placed online in various blogs, magazines, and print. I will also work towards expanding on this recipe to create new flavors of BBQ Sauce. If my goal is not reached I will use the money to better my company. I will fulfill all of the perks and incentives given to every contributor. Our top contributors will have the chance to help design labels and taste new sauces being developed even have the opportunity to have the sauce named after them!
