That's the Spirit! features award winning American ghost hunter Billy Joe Powers, who has run out of ghosts to hunt in the USA so has come to the UK to hunt the oldest ghosts in the world. Can ghosts even age? Let’s find that and many more ghostly things out as we delve deep in to the paranormal world of ‘That’s The Spirit!’
Billy Joe Powers was a keyboard player in the early 2000’s band ‘Hoobastank’, which had their biggest hit in 2004 with ‘The Reason’ which reached number 1. After a life changing experience with a ghost whilst on tour with the band, BJ Powers decided to turn his back on music and dedicate the rest of his life to discovering the truth to everything there is. After 8 successful seasons of ‘That’s the Spirit!’ in the US it’s finally time for Billy Joe and his team of ghost hunting experts to bring their talents to the UK. Using copyrighted ghost hunting techniques, devised by BJ himself and never before seen in the UK, the crew will be poking around the UK with the quest to find the most haunted places the most haunted country in the world has to offer. Starting with the seaside city of Portsmouth.
So, join BJ and his supernaturally obsessed film crew of fearless ghost chasers as we take a sneak peak into the paranormal world of ‘THAT'S THE SPIRIT!’
Where is the funding going?
![]()
This pie chart shows the % of where the overall money fundraised will be split. The majority of which will go towards securing our main location, Wymering Manor. The other areas are props for the film, food, snacks and drinks as well as transport costs for our crew and cast.
Lastly, we aim to enter That's the Spirit! into as many short film festivals as possible. We are focussing on both Horror and Comedy festivals, as well as festivals with broader categories. We need a certain amount of the budget to be dedicated to entering these festivals as they all demand a fee for entry.
Who are we? Meet the crew
Here we are banging on about our film but it would probably be a good idea around now to tell you a bit about who we are. So we'll do just that!
We're a group of film students from the University Of Portsmouth (don't stop reading or we'll send our ghosts to haunt you;)) and now that's out of the way you can probably understand why we are reaching out to you for a potential donation. We are incredibly poor. There's no denying that. However, what we lack in pounds we more than makeup for in passion!

That’s the Spirit!’s script came to life due to Davey’s admiration for the horror genre. However, by approaching the narrative with immersive intent and a dry satirical sense of humour is where our director’s passion also lies. It is these combined influences and a clear vision that positions Davey as the clear choice to take direction of this unique short film within the horror comedy genre.
Davey is also a professional performer with over 6 years’ experience. He recently starred in a music video for the New Zealand based drum and bass artist ‘Trei’ and he also won the best newcomer award for his performance in ‘Sundown’ at the Birminghamfest in 2019. This is all very handy as Davey is also taking one of the lead roles in That’s the Spirit!. Due to the immersive approach to filmmaking our production is adopting, it allows Davey to direct and perform simultaneously.

Hello! My name’s Ryan and I’ve been practising cinematography since the days we all thought we could be professional YouTubers. I’ve shot primarily 48 Hour Film Challenges and won 2 Best Cinematography awards on them; imagine what I’ll achieve with more than a day to shoot! My job will be to ensure our story is told through our visuals and lighting, the latter being extremely important for the genre. This is my most ambitious project yet and I can’t wait to bring the concept to life for all of you to see!
EDITOR - Cameron Austin

With that said, I am really looking forward to getting this project underway and would love it if you could follow us through the journey we are on, creating this new exciting film made by students!

RISK IT FOR A BISCUIT
Although we are all becoming experienced film makers in our specialised fields. We are aware that we lack some of the experience that some more seasoned filmmakers possess. That's the Spirit! as a production is an entire challenge in itself. Each member of the crew will be faced with different challenges across production.
If you're still reading, thank you for showing an interest in our film. We would love you to become part of our That's the Spirit! family and come on this creative journey with us! Any questions, fire them at us! We'd love to hear from you!
