THE TRANSFORMATION
With the support of our already incredible community, we have purchased the 747 jumbo jet and completed Phase 1 of the construction in the Mojave Desert. To all of those who have supported the project thus far — we say thank you.
Now here’s an overview of the artistic and engineering plan for the 747. The project construction is broken into three main phases:
STEP 1: Purchase, clean out, and cut off the tail/wings of the 747 jet
STEP 2: Reconstruct the upper deck and refinish the cockpit, cut the upper section of the fuselage, and prep the upper fuselage for transport
747-300 ready for prepping
Removing Gill paneling
Removing insulation and other panels
Interior cleaned and prepped for cutting
Preparing wing tips for removal
Cutting off wing

2016 - TRANSPORT UPPER HALF OF 747 TO PLAYA
By far the largest expense of the project is transportation.

What the 747 will look like on the Playa in 2017:
In order to make our project a reality and bring the 747 to Burning Man, we need your help. Such a massive undertaking requires an even larger amount of volunteer coordination and financial support. To date our project has been supported and funded through hundreds of individual contributors from the community. And we intend to maintain that trend - a project made by the community, for the community.
We are a certified 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation. Each donation you make today is entirely tax deductible. The story of the project began in 2009 when Ken Feldman first sketched a 747 with the top cut off in the dust of the Playa while camping with Robot Heart. “This” said Ken, “would be the craziest art car of all time!” So crazy that he put the idea aside.
In 2011, Ken co-founded Camp Charlie and designed and built the Charlie the Unicorn art car. Joining him in the camp that year was Jonathan Teo, who came back to help with Charlie the next year. Ken handed over the reigns of Charlie in 2013 to DJ Diva Danielle, vowing to never build another art car, unless...
In 2014, returning from Burning Man, he shared his long dormant 747 idea with Will Lundy, who told him about the Mojave Airport where a fleet of 747s lay grounded at the boneyard. After verifying that a usable 747 did exist, on Saturday, September 13th, 2014, he shared the idea with his old camp mate Jon Teo, who grabbed him by the shoulders and said “Let's do this!". Jonathan was convinced that this monumental idea should only become reality if he and Ken were able to get a wider community involved, building an art car that would be all-inclusive, for the community and by the community.Inspiration
Education
With such a monumental project spanning many disciplines across arts, engineering, and sciences, there are obviously a larger number of risks and challenges we must face along the way. The biggest risk is the ability to raise the capital we require to fund the deconstruction and transport of the 747. Your donation support today will directly help fund the coordination and transportation costs of moving the jet across the desert and to the sands of Black Rock City, NV. Our goal is to reach there in time to help lead off the Burning Man festival with a bang. Above lists our intended construction schedule along with our financial stretch goals. Although our initial campaign goal is $50,000, as you can see by the funding schedule this is just a fraction of the funds required . If we do not raise the required funds, we will be unable to bring the 747 to Burning Man this year and will be forced to place the jet construction on hold.
Besides providing financial support, you can help in many different ways. We are always looking for volunteers to help with the construction of this aircraft. You each have a special gift and special skills. We want you to become a part of this project and share in this historical moment. Even you can’t make it to Burning Man this year, we still want you to experience what it will be like to be on plane. Please reach out to us to help volunteer by clicking on the following image:
Please send us some information about how you can help and we will contact you with details.
Please also help to spread our message by sharing both our inspiration as well as yours on liking us and posting on Facebook (#ImagineBig747), Twitter, and Instagram. We look forward to connecting with all of you. Let’s make this year a year to remember!
Q: Will the 747 be flown into Burning Man?
A: No. Due to the way we are mutating the aircraft, it will not be able to fly into Burning Man. However, it will eventually be a moving art car on wheels.
Q: What happens if you don’t reach your stretch goals?
A: If we are unable to raise the funds for this year, then we will not be able to bring the full 747 jet to the playa this year. Based on how much we raise, we will bring parts or all of the 747 as per the plan above. Your donation today will strictly be used and reserved for the transportation costs of moving the plane to the playa.
Q: What happens if you surpass your stretch goals of more than $240K?
A: If we surpass our goal to raise the funds needed for transportation costs, then we will use the remaining funds to start funding the construction costs for Phase 2 and Phase 3. We will be engaging in other fundraising efforts with the community between now and the end of the campaign in order for us to proceed with the construction. Surpassing the $240K will mean that we will have to raise less funds externally from the community — which would be a huge help!
Q: Where will the money I donate go towards if you do not bring the 747 to Burning Man in 2016?
A: Your donation today is to be used for the transportation costs of moving the 747 to the playa, even if we are unable to bring the plane to the playa this year. Your donations will be a key part of funding this project— even if we have to bring the 747 to Burning Man in 2017 instead of this year.
Q: When will we receive our gifts for our donations?
A: Our expectation is that we will have the orders fulfilled sometime in August, 2016
