HOW THE AIR DOCK CAME TO BE
I was always told as a kid, “Necessity is the mother of all invention.” That is why the Air Dock was born.
My brother and I had just gotten brand new Nexus 5 phones. Our previous phones had docks built specifically for them, and we had become accustomed to using them in the car. I started looking for a car dock for the Nexus 5 and nothing existed, so I began gathering ideas for how to build my own.
I bought a handful of wireless chargers, car mounts, and other parts, and started hacking them together. After a few days, I had a working car dock for my phone.
I wasn't content with my first attempt. I kept making new ones that were better than the previous. My brother and I would brainstorm new things to try, and then test them on our phones. After a dozen or so iterations, I had a good functioning dock.
It was then that I realized there might be other people who would like a dock like this. I had always wanted to try a crowd funding campaign, so I decided to give it a go.
I knew if I was going to sell the Air Dock, it had to be very polished and work properly. I went through several more versions until I had something I thought was good enough to sell to people.
We reached the funding goal for the first campaign quickly and easily. It was a lot of hard work but we fulfilled the first campaign perks, and even did it on time. The Air Dock was an official success!
During the first campaign, I received some great suggestions from customers about possible avenues of improvement. I was excited to see if I could make the Air Dock even better. After months of working in the shop, I'm pleased to announce that the Air Dock 2.0 directly implements several crucial customer recommendations.
At this point we have perfectly functioning prototypes of the Air Dock 2.0. All we need to get this product into the hands of people all over the world is another successful crowd funding campaign. I was so pleased with the response of the first campaign that I wanted to do it again. I wanted to let the people who are interested in this product fund it, and bring it to market.
Lessons Learned from The Air Dock 1.0.
The engineering and prototyping phase of the first campaign was nothing new to me, but there were many hard lessons to learn about supply chain timelines and streamlining the manufacturing process. Our plan for the Air Dock 2.0 takes these lessons into account. We are confident we can get this product to you in the timeline we have planned.
