Akira Project - teaser # 1 from Cine Ground on Vimeo.

Short Summary

We are creating a live action fan trailer of the renowned manga-turned-anime “Akira”. Ever since Kodansha first published the manga in 1982, Hollywood has been trying to adapt it into a feature film. In 2002, Warner Bros acquired the rights to the film and has tried four times to make production happen. Each effort was cancelled for various technical, scripting, budgetary and casting reasons; most recently in January 2011 with the story location having been moved from Neo-Tokyo to Neo-Manhattan.

We, as fans, felt like we ought to take a shot at making our own adaptation. A chance to stick as close to the source material as possible. A chance to do Akira Justice.

Over the last few months we have been busy shooting various pre-productions tests to show you what we will be able to achieve. The first glimpse of which is this live action poster, faithfully recreating the poster from the 1988 anime:

The Akira Project

We are also in the process of building Kaneda's laser gun, with working electronics and all. You can take a look down below at the work in progress, nearing completion. You can even get the real thing if you donate to the 'Yamagata' segment on this campaign!

We also custom made a very detailed Kaneda's jacket, paying very close attention to the detail that would make it as epic as in the Manga. You can also get this jacket if you donate to the 'Kaneda' segment on our campaign!

Who we are

My name is Nguyen-Anh Nguyen, I run a small film production company named CineGround in Montreal, Quebec. I have been producing and directing short fiction films for the past 4 years, winning many awards worldwide. For as far as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the world of Katsuhiro Otomo. I went into film because I wanted to create stories as striking as Akira and I wanted to give the fans out there a truthful adaptation of this masterpiece.

The team I have assembled is as passionate as myself about this project. They are all professionals in their respective field and with their help, we will be able to achieve a high end, exciting fan trailer.

What We Need & What You Get

We are putting 5000$ of our own money and are harnessing all of the technical and human resources that we have access to. This will be shot on the RED Epic camera, with professional lighting and gear and the crew will consist of professional film personnel who are donating their time. But making a trailer of such a magnitude as Akira, means that we still require more money to pay for all the other things needed on a film shoot.

We are shooting over four days in September 2012. We will need more money to secure locations, equipment, transportation & catering for a crew of 20, realistic costumes and props to recreate the world of Akira and finally all the special effects and CGI that a movie like Akira requires.

In return, we can offer perks such as the DVD of the trailer, behind the scenes footage, production tshirts, a high quality print of the awesome live action poster we designed, invitation to the premiere, producer credits and finally the one and only Kaneda's jacket and pants!

If we don't reach our goal, we will still produce this trailer as we have people commited to finishing the project no matter what. However, the level of quality will be reflected by the budget constraints.

The Impact

As fans, it always pains us to see old school masterpieces being destroyed by the corporate nature of Hollywood; where numbers often prevail over originality. We want to do this because we want to see the vision of Akira come to life in the most realistic way possible and show that there is a public out there for honest, original manga adaptations.
