What is the Quidditch World Cup?
The 2016 Quidditch World Cup is where the best quidditch players from around the world will go head to head for ultimate glory, which will take place on the 23rd and 24th of July in Frankfurt, Germany. The Australian Dropbears will be competing at the highest level of quidditch competition in the world. Twenty five countries from across the globe will compete for national pride, more than the previous two international tournaments combined, in what is sure to be a thrilling and intense competition.
What is quidditch?
Quidditch is a mixed-gender full-contact sport with a unique mix of elements from rugby, dodgeball, and tag. For more information about the rules of Quidditch visit the Quidditch Australia website.
Who are the Dropbears?
Twenty one Australian quidditch players have been selected from the best and brightest to represent down under and chase down that elusive gold. They are an elite squad of athletes from Victoria, New South Wales, The Australian Capital Territory and Western Australia lead by a fearsome captain/coach duo. Nine of the twenty one players are returning for another turn and seeking to better their silver medals from last time, and all are out for blood.
Why are we crowd funding and where is the money going?
As a developing sport, Quidditch doesn't have the backing and professional support of most other sporting leagues, consequently, travel to events such as these comes entirely out of the pockets of the players. As an isolated country, travel overseas is often very expensive for Australians, and the cost per person is going to exceed $3,000. One of the key principles of Quidditch is inclusion and we want to ensure all the players who want to go can attend without significant financial detriment. Every cent raised will go towards subsiding player travel, so any amount will help reduce costs and is therefore greatly appreciated.
