Preamble

The Baptism of Chloe Foy poster

I suppose most of us in the Christian faith can tell our own story about someone we know, loved and were somehow invested in, who left the church. For us in the family of faith, when someone makes the choice to leave, it impacts our community on many levels. On a spiritual level we tend to feel a great sense of loss because it’s not easy watching someone reject salvation. On a personal level, we simply miss the presence of people whose personalities brightened our church going experience. And while we miss everyone who walks out of the proverbial door, the impact of young people leaving the church is especially felt.

Researches estimate that somewhere near 40 to 50 percent of teens who grew up in the Adventist faith leave the church by the time they are in their mid 20s. In some places this number is said to be as high as 70 percent. The statistics regarding youth retention are significant but they fail to convey the real human emotion of families, friends and loved ones who are impacted by the loss of teens and young adults who leave. It does seem that Roger L. Dudley was right in his book published in 2000, titled Why Our Teenagers Leave the Church, when he states that “The church can have no higher priority then stemming the loss of young adults and winning back those who have left it's ranks.” (pg 37)

If Roger L. Dudley accurately articulated the charge for Christians in this church age, then we, in the Christian film community are doing our part to answer the urgent call.

Our Story

Between Father and Son poster

In 2008 we premiered our first film called Between Father and Son at Co Op City SDA Church in the Bronx, NY. Written and directed by Clarence E. McCall, Between Father and Son tells the story of a father who struggles to keep his seventeen year old son in the Christian faith.

While touring Between Father and Son many people suggested that we do a film about a girl who grew up in the Christian church and her struggles with faith and spirituality. So the idea for The Baptism of Chloe Foy was born.

The Baptism of Chloe Foy, also written and directed by Clarence, tells the story of an 18 year old young lady who grew up in a strict Christian home. After having a big fight with her over protective father, Chloe leaves home to pursue life on her own far away from her parents conservative values. A series of events leads Chloe to have a close encounter with death and with God, and she learns that her values are not far from her parents values after all. The Baptism of Chloe Foy can be described as a modern day prodigal son story with a female lead.

The Impact

The Baptism of Chloe Foy differs from Between Father and Son in several ways: 1) it will be a feature length movie, 2) it will be the inaugural project of a soon to be announced faith based film ministry, and 3) it will be a film that is intentionally designed to be used as an evangelistic tool.

One of the components of The Baptism of Chloe Foy that the creators are most excited about is our bible study guide and youth week of prayer programs. We are currently in talks with the Christian publishing company called Review and Herald to produce a customized bible study based on the film, as well as a youth week of prayer packet that will include a prayer journal.

Obviously we live in a media and technology driven age where digital imagery is king. And while most of what is produced in the media tends to be unfavorable to the values of Christianity, there still exist a huge opportunity for Christian filmmakers to utilize cinema as a tool to engage an audience. And when used correctly, Christian films can reach people where they are and deliver a much needed word from the throne of grace. We know because we’ve seen it done with films like Letters to God, Facing the Giants and Courageous.

Our mission is clear, we want to inspire and energize young people about the values of Christianity, by giving folks in the local churches a tool that can be used to facilitate conversations about Godly character, faith and spirituality. Soul winning is at the very heart of this film ministry, with a particular interest in young adults.

What We Need & What You Get

As you can see from above we set a goal to raise $50,000. A portion of this money will cover production expenses including everything from permits and securing locations, to makeup and wardrobe, as well as providing food and transportation for our cast and crew.

If we fail to reach our goal we will then use whatever funds we have raised to cover production expenses but we will shoot a scaled down version of the film. We already shot 25 scenes of the 94 needed, but that was the maximum we could shoot without any money at all.

To many people, $50,000. sounds like a lot of money but in the world of film, even low budget movies can spend that amount in a single day. We’re able to get by because of the awesome volunteers that are working with us, the friendly relationships that we have with organizations like the Greater New York Conference – Media Center and the North Eastern Conference, and truly by the grace of God.

For every contribution that you make we have set up some awesome rewards. Please look through all of them before you make your decision, you never know, you might decide to upgrade. A lot of thought went into them because it is important to us that you know that you are appreciated.
