THE BOOK OF ANDY follows Andy after he responds “...I don’t know” to a marriage proposal from his long time boyfriend. When he can’t figure out why he couldn’t say yes, Andy decides to visit his ex-boyfriends in an attempt to understand what “went wrong” there, only to find they are thriving without him, leading him to take desperate measures: he tells them he’s dying. A comedy written by CSUB and NYU alum, Michael J. Mejia, the play explores the world of the modern dating through the eyes of a gay man who is suddenly hit with the intensity and surprise of marriage.
With the recent reintroduction of marriage equality in California, and throughout the Unites States, THE BOOK OF ANDY comes to us at a perfect time when the gay community finds itself in a state of transition, exercising the overdue right to say “I do.” Mejia has written a funny, touching, and honest play that will have people laughing in their seats, as well as pioneer a new chapter of Gay American Theatre that reflects who “we” are today and who “we” will be tomorrow.

When you donate, you will be credited as 'Producer.' The show currently has a $0 budget. Any and all money raised will go directly to purchasing building materials for the set, costumes, set pieces, props, lighting, properties. Every dollar you contribute will be seen on stage. The show is looking to be entered/accepted in either LA or NYC Fringe. You're producing credit will follow the production.

The Producing Theatre Company, The Empty Space, is a non-profit community theatre. They do not charge admission to there shows. Every show is free! All they ask is for a suggested donation to help keep the lights on and the doors open so they can continue to give the city of Bakersfield an opportunity to see live theatre.

The Playwright, Michael J. Mejia, has had over a dozen productions in Bakersfield. This will be his second full length play to receive a World Premier in Bakersfield. After receiving his BA in English and BA in Theatre from Cal State Bakersfield, he attended NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Asia, in Singapore, where he received his MFA in Dramatic Writing with a concentration in Playwriting. His plays usually explore themes on the Mexican/American experience, the Gay experience, and Modern Christianity.

Remember, every dollar helps. Even you can't help financially, spreading the word is just as appreciated. Theatre is a communal experience and it takes a community to produce theatre. The show will be FREE ADMISSION and the production team for The Book of Andy would love to see you there!

The production runs January 10th, 11th, 17th, and 18th, 2014.
