Short Summary
Hello, I'm Megan Charland. I'm producing and co-curating an experimental dinner event, The Civil Appetites, on May 3, 2013 with the research and design collaborative spurse. We are inviting participants to join us in a meal and conversation about food culture.
The Civil Appetites is in conjunction with the exhibition Eat It at Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo) April 4 - May 12, 2013. While our dinner event takes place towards the end of the exhibition, we will have an installation up at RoCo for the duration of Eat It to compliment, and lead up to, our event. The Civil Appetites is co-curated by Matthew Friday.
The dinner event (May 3, 2013) is taking place during First Friday and we invite the public to stop in and participate!
I am thrilled to bring spurse to Rochester, NY and now am seeking your help to financially make it happen.
What We Need
The funds raised during this campaign will be used towards supplies for the exhibition and dinner event as well as providing an honorarium for spurse. Any additional funds raised will increase the honorarium for spurse going towards travel costs (to Rochester, NY).

The Impact
The Civil Appetites would increase civic participation, environmental awareness and help produce new models of responsible thinking and being in the world. This event will be widely publicized, with the potential to bring a diverse community into contact with the amazing work being done in Rochester around the issues of food culture.

Who, or rather what is spurse?
Spurse is a research and design collaborative that catalyzes critical issues into collective action. Through a playful transformation of conceptual and material systems, we develop problems worth having and worlds worth making, engaging across scales and complexities of all things human and nonhuman, organic and non- organic. We begin every endeavor by locating ourselves of the world, not merely in the world. Spurse has an extensive amount of experience in designing educational community service events that bring together multiple stakeholders with the aim of making a positive difference in the world. Central to our mission is to creatively rethink how citizens can become aware of their position in ecological networks across multiple scales of temporality and spatiality. We have designed numerous public events that bring together diverse stakeholders and have collaborated with large-scale NGOs such as the North Atlantic Marine Alliance, the Riverkeepers and Rural Action. Our work emphasizes ecological dynamics, critical thinking and education for sustainability. To learn more about us see: www.spurse.org.
Invitation from spurse
Please accept our invitation for dinner.
To eat more than you can: Ideas, Practices and Foods.
To give more than you know.
We wish to explore and invent with you a world that is already everywhere: the commons.
We wish to explore and invent with you a world that is still to come: the commons.
And yes, we can go on and tell you about all that is wrong with our food practices -- how we eat is literally killing us and the planet. But you know all that. So enough said. What should we do? Again, as you taught us, this is the wrong question.
What are we already doing? What are you doing?
We are interested in your practices.
We are interested in what is everywhere -- the commons.
We are interested in what is almost nowhere: subsistence.
And so we invite you to an experimental dinner event The Civil Appetites, aimed at exploring future food ways and commons. What we can offer: a meal that radically fuses experimental practices of gathering, cooking, serving and talking.
We look forward to spending the evening with you and seeing what could happen next!
