HELP US HELP THEM!
(sister site at $80.00 - www.gofundme.com/the-cns-project)
Hello, my name is Adrian Edmonds, Founder of Computers N'Sync (CNS). I have over 25 years training and experience in the I.T. field. Before CNS there was OpFix (Operation fix). This was the umbrella under which myself and a few I.T. guys in the field, moonlighted, repairing computers for those in need at a fraction of the cost charged by retail outlets. Computers N'Sync was created as we expanded our services to small businesses to give them the same technical infrastructure seen in larger corporations BUT at a fraction of the cost.
Many of you who know me have kindly listened to me go on and on about the prices people are charged for repairs or the poor repair jobs they've received. I had to sit back and watch a young lady attempting to finish College classes in tears because her computer had failed due to viruses. The store rep told her she would have to pay $179.00 to have it repaired (Something I could fix in 15 minutes). She didn’t have that kind of money and walked away with tears in her eyes. I see this again and again.
The SPSP (School Preparation and Support Project), whose purpose is to bridge a gap by providing College Students and Families on Public Assistance with children returning to school the help needed. For one full month at the beginning of the school year (August) CNS will repair/cleanup Operating System problems on these computers for free. During the school year if a problem arise CNS will charge only a flat fee of $20.00 to help keep these systems operational.
We have all acknowledged the gap in technical resources between low income communities and that of the middle and upper class. The Federal Government has acknowledged this with a budget to get technology into these areas. While we are now getting computers to lower income families with programs and organizations such as Goodwill (providing refurbished computers as gifts, giveaways or for as little as $50-$100). The gap will continue to expand if the cost to repair when a problem arises is more than the cost of the computer (cost for repair from retail stores; averaging $150-$299). They simply cannot afford the repair service.
Let’s face it NO ECONIMIC CLASS is immune to Computer Virus, Disastrous Software Install, Accidental Reboot that corrupts the drives, etc. Computers arrive at retail stores daily to get serviced. The differences are; THOSE WHO CAN AFFORD TO GET IT FIXED and THOSE WHO CANNOT. Its time I help level the playing field.
The Problem here is that CNS cannot do this alone and seeks government and community support. Currently CNS is seeking a grant to help subsidize this effort. We have always operated On-Site and therefore there was no need for anything more than a one room office. Now we must seek a site to allow walk in services. A GRANT takes time and AUGUST is approaching. Therefore we are seeking Community support.
Give them a chance to make a difference in the world.
"We find it hard to assign homework that requires resarching online or even typing a report. A good portion of our students do not have a working computer at home". - Ms. Jones (Teacher)
As stated AUGUST is quickly approaching and we have two (2) millstones:
The First is $17,000; If raised we will find a site to rent for the month, setup utilities (electric, water, internet access), Furnishing (chairs, tables, etc) , and equipment (backup drives, external cases, routers, etc) and the expense for 2 I.T. experienced specialist to be there for the month. Also Locking Cabinets, Temporary Insurance and/or security (we will have customer property overnight). We can close up shop at the end of the month in success.
MODIFICATION (only 1 milestone): A few donors have stated they would feel more comfortable about their donation if we became a permanent fixture. I have been focusing on finding a permanent location so we can act on the Back to School project AND CONTINUE to be available throughout the year. Our services will be more readily available to the public. (CNS services have always been at least half the cost of services provided by the local stores. We have NO corporate overhead). Anyone that has had a computer repaired knows how quickly some places will build up the problems and the fees and in a lot of instances the system still returns with problems.
Many of you have jumped in to help in some way or another. In fact a few of you have become advisors looking for resources to meet these goals, even looking at ways to cut cost. Stay posted as we watch the numbers and we let you know where we stand with a location, temporary or permanent.
So let’s get to the DONORS. GIFTS and PERKS will also make you feel good about your Donation. And I have a lot of faith in all of you. This Project is important. So here is what we are giving:
Every Donor will be placed on an Acknowledgement letter given to the STUDENT recipient of the repair. A plaque will remain in Computers N’Sync’s new home with all of your names to remind us of your support.
Donors of $10 will receive THE CNS PROJECT t-shirt
Donors of $40 will receive/will receive the 50/50 gift card. It gives you 50% off a computer repair with Computers N’Sync.
Donors of $50 will receive A BRONZE Card. It’s an EMERGENCY card. If something happens to your computer don’t worry about waiting till pay day. Bring the computer and the card to our new home and the Repair Service is free.
Donors of $100 will get the SILVER Double-Up/His-and-Hers Emergency Card. Maybe you would like to share it with that special someone or just double your protection.
Donors of $200 will get the GOLD Family Pack Card (4 free Emergency repairs).
Donors of $400 will get the PLATINUM II 2 x 2 Emergency Card (protection for 2 years for 2 computers).
Sooooo… you don’t live in Dayton or the surrounding area... huh? No problem we have SUBSTITUTIONS! Yaaaaah!
$10- THE CNS PROJECT t-shirt
$100- T-Shirt AND USB Lanyard Flash Drive (we love this so much we are may look into getting contributions to pass these out to the students with the computer repairs).
$15 - CNS PROJECT MUG.
$35- You will get this Cool Side- Sling Backpack.
$200 - Double it ALL UP and have a matching set, Lanyard, T-Shirt, Side Sling Backpack!
Note: If for some reason we don't make/get-close-enough to the second milestone we will happily substitute the NON-LOCAL gifts/perks to our Local Donors. BUT COME-ON seriously… Would you rather pay a Retail Stores around $150-$299 dollars for a repair or utilize the card which is much less and have an I.T. person work on your system(experienced at keeping Business computers operational, instead of a clerk at some retail store). Lets meet both Milestones.
Cecillia Kang in an article in the Washington post wrote, “Technology has become essential to middle school and high school learning, but a gap in access to the Internet between the rich and poor is leading to troubling disparities in education, according to a survey of teachers”.
“At this school, using the Internet for college choice, admission, financial aid, and enrollment is just a given. We expect our students to use the Internet to be fully aware of their options.” - Article American Academic
There are so many of these types of statements on the web. Help us make the difference and maybe set an example for other businesses in other cities to host a free-back-to-school-computer-repair program.
On the CNS web site I quote, “…find the simplest and least expensive solution to a problem and then expand from there”. Our business clients understand that quote. CNS expanded, specializing in setting up Virtual Private Networks/Cloud Services in small businesses giving them a Corporate Level technical foundation at a fraction of the cost. Our private Clients love our low prices and service. We go back to the basics (25 years experience) to come up with solutions.
The computers we repair/cleanup for businesses are exemplary. CNS uses an automated method of checking repair and optimizing systems before we begin our work. Ninety percent of the STUDENT Computer problems would not even be a challenge to our systematic approach of prepping systems. We are not sales clerks tinkering with peoples computers. We not only remove viruses and repair the problem but we check the integrity of the drives, integrity of windows Operating System, Clean and repair ALL issues related to windows registries.
Keep the computers running. Donate!
If you take part in this, I will make sure Computer N’Sync does its part every year. My goal is for CNS to have SPSP this year. It’s for a good cause and CNS can return something back to the community in a big way.
