Our Story
Not long after Burning Man 2014, two new friends sat across each other at the bar discussing their futures in the burner community. One friend turned to the other and asked, "if you could do anything this year, just for fun, what would it be?" From this question, and their friendship, The Deep was born.
The Deep is a story of a misfit band of burners brought together by a common dream - a giant, luminous jellyfish. Armed with our mutual affinity for deep sea life, a handful of useful skills and past *experiences*, and apparently too much free time on our hands, we embarked on a mission to create the dreamiest mutant vehicle on the East Coast.
The journey hasn't been easy, but it's been fun as hell. Our build plan is on pace to meet our goal of premiering The Deep at Burning Man 2015, and with a little more help from you, we'll be able to finish this fantasy gift for the DC Burning Man community!
What We Need & What You Get
Thanks to our successful fundraising event in May, we have already raised enough money to fund the vehicle and most of the materials for the jellyfish. (Yay!) Now, we only need to raise $2,000 more to fund the following essentials for the build:
- The Deep's sound system - $400
- The vehicle lights and supplemental battery - $300
- Building materials for the vehicle's coral reef bodywork (steel pole holders, wire mesh, PVC, foam pieces, paint, adhesive, etc.) - $300
- Monthly warehouse fees and transport costs to Burning Man - $1000
If you help us raise more than our $2,000 base goal, we can afford to go all out and add these exciting possibilities to The Deep:
- Side outrigger pontoons and guardrails to support the vehicle and allow passengers to ride on the top level safely - $200 - $300
- Additional lights and building materials to complete the full "coral reef chariot" vision for the vehicle body - $500
- Even a second jellyfish to create a "dueling dancing jellyfish" vehicle! - $700
What Are you Waiting For? Be Part of History, Man!
For years, DC burners have wanted to build more mutant vehicles, but due to limited maker space and the high cost of transport to Burning Man, very few mutant vehicle dreams have been realized from this otherwise thriving community. The Deep will be a symbol of beauty and pride for DC for years to come.
This is a community gift! The more successful our fundraising, the more fun The Deep will be to party with and ride on at Burning Man, local festivals, and DC events! So please contribute what you can and share this campaign with more friends!
