Co-founder Joshua has experience in food, beverage, branding, communications, and transformative education.  Having grown up equally in Maine and California, he embodies a commitment to community, excellence and fun.  With his love for the active, health-conscious foodie/drinker and his commitment to what's really possible in life, Joshua serves as the visionary managing director for Dr Hops Kombucha Beer. 

Co-founder Tommy has experience in both kombucha fermentation and beer brewing.  Having grown up in California with a love for microbiology and transformative life processes, he is undeniably on a quest for ever more tantalizing alcoholic fermentations.  Tommy is the inspired and passionate brewer at the heart of Dr Hops' astounding kombucha beer.

Our product is true, living kombucha, a cultured, probiotic tea.  And it’s way tastier and pleasing than any kombucha you've ever had!  It's fruity, fresh, herbal, aromatic, sparkling, balanced, and fun!  People are amazed when they learn what it is.  You've just got to try it!

Our business has been developing steadily since we started in May of 2015 and we've now got:

• several products ready for commercial production, some at 8-10% alcohol and some at 5-6%
• many more tantalizing ideas in development
• most of the initial licensing we need
• plans for two distinct and complimentary production pathways
• several great distributors interested in carrying our line
• a great new friend & legal partner, Janelle, from Buffett-Kennedy Smith
• consumers, retailers, cafes, bars and other businesses ready to buy

Risks & Challenges:

Suffice to say, there are tons of risks and challenges.  I’m sure you can think of some.  That’s a good thing!  As far as we can tell, great reward only comes through great risk.  Plus, given our core value Awesomeness, risk is expected.  Here are a few:

• Funding:  We could fail to get adequate funding. 
• Production:  We could fail at producing the product effectively and reliably.
• Sales:  We could fail to sell enough product and at a price sufficient to make our business viable.  Demand could dry up.  Competition could crush us. 
• Distribution:  We could fail to get our product to our customers effectively.
• Legal:  We could run into problems with the law, licensing issues, or lawsuits.
• Social/Environmental:  We could find ourselves in a dangerous social and/or environmental climate.

Tommy and I are two similarly committed humans with highly complementary talents.  We are both committed to people, and all of earth's creatures, being loved, honored, connected, and free.  This is the context for all that we do, and it sources our mission and values as a business.  It is an honor for each of us to be on this journey, and we don’t take it lightly.  For both of us, Dr Hops Kombucha Beer is a tactile and bona fide chance to fulfill our commitments in the world.  We will make this happen.

Tommy grew up in the greater bay area and still has close family and friends here.  He’s got an awesome partner and two loving dogs, Rupert and Stella.  His love for great fermentations is contagious and he just keeps making them ever more delightful.

I’ve been in the bay area since 2006, and have a massive community here.  I now live two miles from the Dr Hops brew space with my miraculously supportive wife and our rabbit, Dr. Hopps.  My basic practice in life is to throw my hat over whatever wall looks worth scaling.  Dr Hops Kombucha Beer, a values-based, mission-driven business with a tantalizing product, is the great wall before me now.
