All about ELA!
Helping young people develop their most valuable asset - themselves!
The Effective Leadership Academy is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing self-leadership and life skills to students in grades 5-12, through innovative and highly interactive programming. We equip students with essential 21st Century Skills by taking students on a self-led journey toward success in college, in the workplace and in life!
ELA was inspired by our Founder and Executive Director Flo Brett, when she recognized the struggle of newly promoted corporate professionals who lacked the necessary traits to assume leadership positions. Flo, a former nurse and executive training program manager, developed and led an intensive adult leadership training program, with outstanding results. Flo quickly identified a significant gap in student leadership training within middle schools and secondary schools, so adapted her successful corporate curriculum to serve the needs of the students.
Since ELA was founded in 2008, it has trained, developed and motivated over 3,500 students at 35 public, private and parochial Northeast Ohio Schools!
Imagine helping a student to believe in their capabilities, leading them to produce high levels of performance that influence and greatly affect their lives and success... YOU can help do this!! The National Partnership for 21st Century Skills, a coalition of educators, policy-makers, business and civic leaders have documented research showing that today's students are not prepared to compete effectively in a global economy. The American Management Association called for students to be more competent in oral and written communication, critical thinking and problem solving, professionalism and work ethic, teamwork, collaboration and leadership.
ELA is a catalyst for positive change that serves to better prepare students in all these areas and prepare them for higher education or entry into the workplace. Help us reach out and benefit more students today! They are our future!

The Impact! The proof is in their performance!
"ELA has given me the tools necessary to be successful in all areas of my life" - Kirk, John Hay High School, Cleveland
"ELA has taught me many things, such as goal-setting, communication, attitude, success, decision-making and leadership. Along with teaching me how to be an effective member of society, ELA has also taught me about myself. ELA required more of me, therefore I require more of myself!" - Taylor, Whitney M. Young School, Cleveland
"ELA has taught me many important leadership and life skills, many of which I will take with me to college." - John, St. Ignatius, Cleveland.
The educators we have worked with also praise the work that ELA has done with their students:
"ELA allows students to not only see themselves as successful, it gives them the tools they will build upon for lifelong success. For the first time in three years- they are actively taking what is being given to them and utilizing it through their academics." - M. Bryon-Johnson, Principal, Whitney M. Young School, Cleveland.
"ELA positively impacted my students' self esteem and confidence, leadership skills, goal setting abilities, time management and networking skills, project management strategies and professionalism. My students are leaving this program with a competitive advantage that will apply throughout their future education and professional opportunities." - Gregory W. Perry, Beachwood High School.
