About Tibet
Tibet has been an occupied country since the Chinese invasion in 1950.
It is estimated that at least one million Tibetans have lost their lives as a result of the occupation; many more have been forced into exile by a Chinese regime that seeks to rule through censorship, oppression, and a systematic destruction of Tibet’s culture.
The preservation of this cultural heritage is of fundamental importance.
About this project
Since 1959, Tibet Relief Fund has worked with Tibetans, providing education and healthcare, cultivating self-sufficiency, and promoting Tibetan culture.
Tibet Relief Fund is custodian of a wonderful collection of paintings, drawings, and research, created by British artist Anne Jennings Brown. Anne lived and worked with the Tibetan exile community in Dharamsala in the early 1980s. The paintings and drawings she created are a unique record of Tibetan regional dress and its methods of production throughout history.
Our aim is to conserve this one-off cultural and artistic resource, whilst promoting it and making it accessible to the Tibetan community and the wider general public.
We want to make sure that this fascinating aspect of culture and history is not forgotten.
The Fabric of Tibet
We are working to produce The Fabric of Tibet, a beautiful and high quality art book that will contain all of the nearly 200 drawings and paintings in the collection.
The final product will be a cloth-bound hardback book, measuring 280mm x 215mm, with 150 pages in full colour.
The majority of the book is dedicated to Anne's paintings and drawings, reproduced in stunning detail and vibrant colour. These are presented alongside Anne Jennings Brown’s accompanying research to give detail on the vast and varied dress traditions of Tibet.
The Fabric of Tibet will also include new material written by specialists in the field of Tibetan art history. These will provide a crash course in the subject, making it accessible to those unfamiliar with Tibetan culture, whilst also offering something new to those more well-versed in the topic.
This will be a totally unique book. Only one other has been published on the topic of Tibetan dress, with research and publishing focused on Tibet in general decline worldwide as the reach of the Chinese government extends across the globe.
We can only make this book a reality with your help.
Our target
With your help, our goal is to raise £3000 to fund the first print run of the book.
We also need your help to distribute copies of The Fabric of Tibet to Tibetan schools and institutions in India and Nepal (and around the world) so Tibetans can learn more about their own cultural heritage.
Stretch goal: the colouring book
Thanks to your generosity we reached our £3,000 goal in just four days! It’s wonderful to know that so many people around the world support the conservation and promotion of Tibetan cultural heritage.
We’ve reached our initial goal but we’re not stopping there – we now want to raise £6,000!
You can help young Tibetan children learn about their own culture even earlier by funding a colouring book. The colouring book will be adapted from The Fabric of Tibet and will get young children involved in a fun, interactive way. The book will also have captions in both Tibetan and English so Tibetan and non-Tibetan children can enjoy the book.
The extra money we raise will allow us to produce the colouring book and distribute it to early years pupils in India and Nepal.
We have launched a new perk! When you buy your copy of the colouring book for £30, you will not only be getting a copy for yourself, you will also be donating a copy to a child in a Tibetan school.
Perks
Supporters of our campaign will be able to purchase a copy of The Fabric of Tibet at an exclusively discounted price of £30 (RRP £35).
In thanks for your vital support we are also offering a range of unique and exclusive perks, including our early bird offers: The first 100 people to choose our early bird perks will have their names printed in the book as a thank you!
We have lots of other exciting options available at a variety of prices, so please check the "Perks" section of this page (right). Whatever you can give will be invaluable in getting this project funded.
