Overview
The Ferryman is a CSULB junior film that aims to explore the themes of loneliness, abuse, escapism, and second-chances from the perspective of a young boy. Desperate to escape his home and abusive father, 11-year-old Theo takes a cab ride with a mysterious driver with whom he shares his dreams and memories.

Theo's Story

Our protagonist, Theo, is a young boy with fantastical dreams shackled and bound by the cruelty of his abusive father. He's a quiet boy, with very few friends and limited social interaction. His only source of escape is his own imagination, where he pictures the beaches of Greece his mother describes to him in her bedtime stories, where the sun always shines and the waves sound like beautiful music.

The Ferryman

According to Greek mythology, once we die, our souls undertake a journey to leave behind the material world, crossing the River Styx into the underworld. Every soul that passes meets Charon the Ferryman, who would take them across the river in exchange for a payment.

Meet the Crew

Sultan Mars, Director & Writer

Sultan was born and raised in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where he developed his intense passion for film-making. Three years ago, his dreams and ambitions landed him on the shores of Southern California the opposite hemisphere, where he enrolled in the narrative film track at California State University Long Beach. Throughout his short time here, he's directed and created a vast body of work, winning multiple Jury Awards at the CSULB Campus Movie Fest for 2017's A Man With the Ring and 2018's Into the Deep. His charisma and energy make it clear why his nickname among friends is Sunny.

Adam Pacheco, Producer

Adam began his long foray into film and video production over eight years ago, all the way back when he was a hyperactive middle schooler who lacked direction but held a strong passion for creating things. Since then, he has devoted himself to constantly developing his skill sets, never content with remaining creatively idle. His time as a student at California State University Long Beach provided ample opportunities to explore his field via internships, job opportunities, and student films/projects.

Kevin McCarver, Producer

Kevin began his journey into the world of film at a young age. Always enamored by film’s emotional power and expressive potential, he began working on his own small passion projects as soon as he was able to hold a camera. It wasn’t until he came to Los Angeles and began working on sets that he fully realized the real beauty of the collaborative process art of filmmaking. His love of fantastical and humanistic stories in particular drew him to The Ferryman script immediately. Wanting to see this project becomes a reality, Kevin came on as a producer to help wherever he can in making Sultan’s vision a reality.

M. Sebastian Kolderup-Lane, Director of Photography

M. Sebastian Kolderup-Lane is a San Francisco native pursing a career in cinematography at CSU Long Beach. He studied media production in Hamburg, Germany as well as a course in short film production in Paris, France. His experiences across the world has allowed for him to work with professionals within different cultures and styles of filmmaking. He is an avid film photographer and visual storyteller.

Jessica Chea, First Assistant Director

Jessica is a first-year film student at California State University of Long Beach, but her passion for filmmaking can be traced back to her hometown, San Bernardino, where she started creating small passion videos. She often finds herself deeply engrossed in films with both unconventional storytelling methods and storylines with unpredictable endings. So far, Jessica has solely script supervised many short films; however, her experiences have strongly prepared her for the role of 1st Assistant Director on The Ferryman.

How you can help!!

Every donation sent in, no matter how large or small, goes a long way in guaranteeing the health and well-being of our cast and crew on set. Making movies is an expensive business, no matter how large of small the project is. Your donations go towards keeping everyone on set fed and hydrated, renting gear we don't have access to at CSULB, and paying for permits and location fees, among other things.
