For the past five years, we've been grinding the freshest flour around, helping people reconnect with their food and their miller. This year, we're doing something different.
While our product hasn't changed, our goal has. Since January, we've been directing 100% of the proceeds of all our sales towards traveling to South Sudan to build a bicycle grinder - just like the one we've been busy turning for the last half decade.
That's right...we're bringing bike-mill technology from the Roberts Creek rainforest to the northern edge of the youngest country on the planet!
On December 9th, my brother Josh and I will fly to Kampala, Uganda, and make our way 1500 kilometres overland to the village of Panlang in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state, South Sudan. There we will attempt to construct a bike-mill for the community in partnership with the Pan-Aweil Development Agency, which has agreed to organize/coordinate our project on the ground.
Follow along with us as we fundraise for this incredible journey!
This journey will take us to one of the most remote and inaccessible corners of South Sudan, a country emerging from decades of civil war and chronic underdevelopment. 'Roads' on maps are little more than sand tracks for hundreds of kilometres, transport is unreliable and basic supplies are hard to locate. It's certainly going to be a challenge to get to Panlang, not to mention actually building the bike-mill on site using local materials and local labour!
All this is going to take $$$ - so we're looking for contributions towards on-the-ground expenses that will make this project a success in South Sudan. This money will not be used for flight tickets; we've secured flights already.
In order to make sure that we committ 100% of our efforts towards this goal, we are utilizing a combination of business as (un)usual (donating 100% of our profits in 2013 to this objective) personalized contributions and this crowd funding campaign. Based on years of past experience, we are confident that these multiple funding sources will allow us to reach our goal by November, 2013.
Every dollar you donate will be directed towards constructing a bike-mill in Panlang, including paying for found materials and local labour.
