I am excited to announce that this project has reached its goal 40 days ahead of schedule! That means the drum production can move forward as scheduled and a very special drum will be donated to the Ability Garden program at the Wilmington, NC arboretum.

But why should we stop there?

This project has the potential to reach 200% funding and I've been tipped off to a program here in Asheville called the Dragonfly Forest. These cats do some really cool things like hosting summer camp and after school programs for special needs children FREE OF CHARGE!. Yeah, that's awesome. And they have a rockin music program, so it sounds like we should kick them a drum right?

The story

As many of you know I have a passion to build things, and over the past six years I have been building and designing drums made from recycled propane tanks.These drums have come a long way from the first one I built nearly six years ago...

Since my move to Asheville, North Carolina I have been contacting local machine shops in order to create a small production of drums which are precision cut to my design. After months of visiting machine shops and gathering estimates for their services I have found a shop that is up to the challenge and has supplied me with my first Laser-cut Flow Drum prototypes...

Each Flow drum is made of 211 steel from recycled propane tanks, lap-sized, cut with laser precision for optimal tone, and tunable over the years by the use of high powered magnets installed. Each drum can be tuned to the pentatonic scale of your choice.

The funds raised from this campaign will contribute to the cost of having these drums Laser cut, and will provide the consumables necessary (Blades, sandpaper etc) to make this production a success.

The Way It Works:

Indiegogo is a free online platform where anyone can raise money for important causes or projects that they are passionate about. If I reach my goal then Indiegogo keeps 4% of my earnings and if I don’t reach my goal Indiegogo keeps 9% of my earnings. All of my earnings will go towards funding of this drum production.

Once the laser cutting process is complete you will be contacted personally and offered a variety of scales to choose from. Each scale contains 8 notes and cover one and a half octaves of a pentatonic scale.

There are over 60 scales listed here so if you need help in determining which scale would suit you best feel free to contact me

Please note that all scales are tuned to A 440 Hz which is standard tuning for modern music.
Each scale can also be tuned to Pythagorean tuning which is A 432 Hz. This tuning is thought to resonate with the human body better but does not play well with most instruments today due to the standardization of tuning to A 440 Hz.

Previous works

In the spring of 2012, after seeing some of my drums, The Arboretum at Wilmington, NC commissioned me to create an musical art installation to be featured in their new butterfly garden. After much thought, I designed a sculpture of a butterfly made entirely out of propane tanks incorporating Flow drums into the piece...

The arboretum hosts a program called the Ability Garden which teaches horticultural therapy for group homes, nursing homes, and people with special needs. While this piece was being installed one of the Ability groups full of children walked by and couldn't resist playing the butterfly drums. There's no greater feeling to me than seeing an art piece fully enjoyed.

If this project reaches full funding, I will personally donate a Flow Drum to the Ability Garden for all to enjoy.
