The Fruited Plain Café
The Fruited Plain Café has been serving the Sioux Center community for 5 years. In that time we've developed a loyal, enthusiastic customer base and become a meeting place and destination for visitors to the area.
When we opened our doors in 2010 our mission was to bring Sioux Center world-class coffee, wholesome, delicious lunch and pastry items, light fare, and a respectable offering of wine and beer from around the world in a cozy, all-ages atmosphere. Since then we've expanded our menu to include the tastiest pizzas in Sioux Center.
Now we feel that the next stage in the development of the Fruited Plain Café is to provide an outdoor seating area to better serve our community. We would like your help to make this a reality — here is the plan.
Outdoor Seating and Events
- We want to make our parking lot an active and attractive space in the warm-weather months. In addition to hosting more live music, fundraisers and other outdoor celebrations, we want to offer Sioux Center a permanent outdoor spot downtown that can be enjoyed throughout the spring, summer, and fall.
-
Many of our customers rely on our drive-thru window, especially in the morning and in the colder months. Our plan for a multi-use space allows for its continued use. Gates at the front and rear of the seating area will open a path for cars at peak drive-thru times, but can be closed as the space transforms into an enclosed patio space.
-
We’ve partnered with several non-profit groups in the past to hold fundraising events at the Fruited Plain at which the non-profit sells food and the Fruited Plain sells drinks. Joint events such as these create a fun atmosphere where non-profits can generate both money and awareness. With a permanent outdoor space, we hope to increase the number of these events.

Projected Costs
-
Phase One | Fence surrounding the proposed patio space
$8,000 for materials, labor and furnishings
-
Phase Two | Pergola for enhanced ambiance and sun protection
$2,000 for labor and materials
Note: We've increased our fundraising goal by 30% to account for cost overages, fees and other unexpected expenses for a total of $13,000.
If we fall short of our goal, we will work on a slightly scaled-back version of the project. If we exceed our goal then we'll use the extra money for additional labor to complete the project more quickly and to add other amenities to make the Fruited Plain patio experience even more enjoyable.
How You Can Help
So, what do we need from you?
Obviously, we need donations from our friends and customers. We are so grateful to the thousands of people who have supported us over the past five years. We know there are a lot of folks all over the country and around the world who've had their lives enriched by the Fruited Plain and have enriched our lives in turn. A donation of any amount from all of you would not only help us make our goal, but easily exceed it.
If you can't help financially, there are other ways to help. We plan to have several community construction days. Some of the work will have to do be done by masons and other professionals, but there will be lots of other work that you can help with as well. Follow us on Facebook to keep informed on our progress and find out when these construction days will be happening.
And tell your friends! Spreading the word to as many people as possible will help broaden the impact of this campaign and make our goal achievable.
Thank you! We are hopeful and optimistic that we can do this!
