Overview
Have you ever gone to a coffee shop and felt out of place? Whether the atmosphere was unwelcoming, the prices were inaccessible, or the menu just wasn't your cup of tea, we know how that feels, and we want to make a space for you.
Hi, we’re Jevonna and Kels, and we’re opening The Galaxy Coffee: a coffee truck for everyone!
As baristas and former coffee shop managers, we have a lot of pride in the coffee we serve. We also have pride in who we are — a small, local, queer and trans-owned worker cooperative with a commitment to building community and paying it forward.
Our vision is to create a space where community gathers — people of all genders and generations — where you don't feel out of place. It's the reason we named ourselves after an idea in the queer community that gender is more than a binary, more than a spectrum, and more like a whole galaxy of possibilities. It's why we have our Community Jar for anyone to pay it forward when they can, and use when they need. It's also why, eventually, we want to open a brick-and-mortar coffee shop for everyone to enjoy each other's company as much as they enjoy our lattes and baked goods. Hopefully with your help, we can make this happen!
Our Goals
-
Inclusivity — we'll always be queer and trans inclusive, and our menu will include vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free options, all for no extra charge.
-
Accessibility — we'll have accessible locations, braille and large-print menus, and with our Community Jar we can provide free food and drink options to customers who need it.
-
Transparency — we work with queer and/or locally owned businesses at every possible opportunity to source our products.
-
Empowerment — we are a worker cooperative, which means we are completely worker-owned.
-
Employment — we're prioritizing BIPOC, queer, trans, and disabled applicants of all generations.
-
Safety — we're requiring masks and social distancing, and we’re committed to creating a safe, healthy, and welcoming environment for our team and customers.
Why We Need Your Help
-
Food truck ($25,000 - $35,000) — we’re prioritizing looking at used food trucks from other local businesses.
-
Brewing equipment ($12,000) — we need two espresso machines, scales, grinders, a fridge, and an oven.
-
Product ($3,000 to start) — we’ll need to buy coffee beans, tea, dairy and non-dairy milks, sweeteners and syrups, and food and bakery items.
-
Licensing and Legal Fees ($2,500) — we need inspections, certifications, and all our ducks in a row before we can officially open our windows!
All together, we're looking at $42,500 - $52,500 to start. With the help of loans and savings, we can get our coffee truck up and running if we make it to our $40,000 Indiegogo campaign goal, which would be incredible! And if the stars align and we're lucky enough to go past that, we can add even more vegan, gluten-free, and low carb food items to our menu, and we can go to more places in Columbus and see more of you!
Our Perks
We have so many perks! From coffee mugs and tumblers to t-shirts and masks, stickers and pins, as well as VIP beverage discounts and personalized thank you cards — we want you to find that perfect fit for your donation!
Our Community Jar is also included in our perks! So if you have a little extra, you can pay it forward for someone else to receive a perk, too. Or, if you need a little extra to get that perk you want, you can share our posts on social media, then email us [hello at thegalaxycoffee.com] with your perk request and a link to your post. We'll hand these out on a first-come, first-served basis with as many perks as the Community Jar will cover!
We'll unlock our 4 hidden perks for reaching each donation benchmark — our sew-on patches at $10,000; our bandanas at $20,000; our tote bags at $30,000; and our fanny packs at $40,000.

Our Story
Jevonna Morris (she/her) — I managed a coffee shop for four years and have been running a queer social group called Queer Crafting for the last five years. I have a degree in City Planning with a focus on Place Making, but it’s my thirteen years of experience in customer service that have taught me all about life, business, and the art of human connection.
Kels Wilson (they/them) — My experience is in coffee shop management and small business marketing. My degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Accounting comes in handy for operating the financial side of our business. And I’m passionate about customer service – seriously, it’s my favorite part of the job!
The Galaxy Coffee — Two years ago, we met working for a large coffee chain, and while we both loved the environment, and especially our customers, we had a bigger dream in common: a queer coffee shop. So this is the first step in that plan! With our coffee truck we can be mobile, versatile, and grow with Columbus and all of you.
We've made it a point to work with queer and/or local businesses every step of the way, from our business attorney to our credit union, and our suppliers for coffee beans, baked goods, and merchandise. We're fully incorporated as a worker cooperative, and we're working with a small business lender to secure our loans, as well as searching for the perfect truck. Our hope is to open as soon as possible, and if our campaign is successful we can do that as early as this summer!
