The Gibraltar Project tells a story that is at the intersection of some of the most important topics of our time: Abortion Rights, Reproductive Rights, Women’s Rights, and Criminal Justice Reform—and it is CRITICAL that we follow as this Referendum Vote is playing out in REAL TIME. With this documentary we seek to Educate & Build Awareness.

The Story
As part of a years-long pursuit to change the criminalization of abortion in Gibraltar, 2 grass roots campaigns were born in 2018. Out of pure passion 2 opposing groups of women set about bringing forth an open discussion over abortion. Before 2018, the super charged issue of abortion was TABOO to speak about in public.

A pervasive, atmospherically thick fog of shame surrounded abortion for many years. Despite being on 2 opposing sides: one group being pro-choice, the other pro-life, these women came together to force a public acknowledgement of the need to discuss Reproductive Rights and Women’s Health access (or lack thereof) in Gibraltar. The government was forced to take notice. As a result, a Referendum was called. A Referendum that would decide if Abortion would remain illegal with a Punishment of Life in Prison or if Abortion would be Decriminalized and allow Gibraltar to end their Draconian stance on Reproductive Rights. The Vote was halted in March of 2020 due to COVID-19.
However, the story is far from over.

Rescheduled the Referendum Vote for June 24, 2021.
And we have an opportunity to Capture a Moment in History unlike any other...

The Gibraltar Project will be proof of the real Impact that Legislation can have on the lives of individuals and communities facing systemic apathy and inequality of care.
In order to tell this story as it unfolds, our filmmaking team is jumping head-first into production “on the road”.
The Referendum Vote will be decided on June 24th, and we are springing into action to cover the key players of each campaign who are demonstrating the urgency of this bill. We will also be following the lawyers and advocates who have spearheaded these campaigns on both sides of the fight.
Filming during this important time in the political process can’t wait!
Having this footage in-hand will demonstrate the interest in such a timely documentary and put us in an excellent position to continue revealing the realities of the current battle over Reproductive Rights from the perspective of the Women who are fighting it in both Gibraltar and the USA.
We’ve been planning for this moment, but still need to meet our fundraising goals.

As one country seeks to expand reproductive rights, the other is on the road to preventing safe access to abortion for the women of its society. The duality is astonishing, and we will bring you into this little storm currently brewing in a teacup, poised to explode at any moment this year.

DETAILED SYNOPSIS:
Covid-19, Brexit, Religion & Abortion, the path to pro-choice in Gibraltar is a Bordertown tale unlike any other. The dichotomy of existence on this “small rock” of a country in the Mediterranean is a fascinating labyrinth of discovery as full of shadows as the WWII defensive tunnels and caves winding through the Rock of Gibraltar itself. A timely, poignant, jarring experiential journey of a documentary, The Gibraltar Project, will grab the audience by the gut and bring them deep into the fight for reproductive rights as it stands in this moment…ever shifting, never static, and constantly questioning our dedication to the pillars of Democracy being shared amongst all in global society. The deeper we delve, the more we realize that the fight in Gibraltar is one that holds a disturbing mirror up to the current battle raging in the courts of the USA, the battle ground where bills that restrict and nearly abolish legal abortion are constantly being signed into state law. We aim to build an Ecosystem of Awareness, and continue to shed light on the continuing fight for Women’s Equality & Reproductive Rights.

All funds will go to travel costs, camera equipment, accommodations, food, covid safety protections and regulations (testing, PPE, and all other country requirements for each jurisdiction). Any additional funds will be used for crew fees and in post-production to bring you the most experiential journey of a documentary film through gritty editing, atmospheric sound, poignant archival footage, as well as licensing, deliverables, and other associated finishing costs.
