In May 2017 we started a small brand called RoughKiwi. The initial idea behind the brand was to create a community of New Zealanders that believe in the kiwi spirit. The brand has been growing rapidly and we have moved into some charity merchandise which has allowed the brand to raise $300 for WWF NZ so far.
New Zealand is a unique country for several reasons. We have some of the best scenery, wildlife and people in the world. However, our culture has undergone rapid changes over the last 100 years, and many New Zealanders are unsure of what the modern kiwi ought to be. Is it still a stubborn Fred Dagg type character adorned with a pair of stubbies, a bucket hat, and gumboots? Or have we all become craft-beer consuming hipsters?
We have no idea, and we believe that we aren't alone. So, we have decided that we want to complete a tour of the nation to discover what it means to be a kiwi in 2018. Sticking with the RoughKiwi theme, we want to make this trip a charity drive. We plan to buy two typically kiwi paddock bashers; Meet at the top of New Zealand and travel to the bottom of New Zealand in approximately ten days. During the trip, we will take part in various challenges that directly relate to discovering modern kiwi culture. Think Top Gear meets Bear Grylls and Country calendar?
The entire trip will be filmed from the planning stage all the way through to the end, and we will create documentary-style videos that will follow our progress throughout our journey.
The route we are taking will undoubtedly change as we want the community involved in determining the exact route. The image below however shows the approximate path that we will take.
Trip will start on approximately the 1st of March 2018 and finish on the 10th of March 2018
This trip is not about making money! We can't afford to complete the trip on our own without your help. We aim to raise $6000 to cover the cost of the cars. Insurance, Ferries, petrol etc. At the end of the trip, we will sell the cars and donate the money to charities that will be determined by the community. When we get to the end of the trip, it is likely that we will still have money remaining; especially if we raise over our goal. If this is the case, this money will also be donated to charities determined by the community.
At the end of the trip, we expect to donate $2000 USD minimum to the charities however it is more than likely to be more than this.
Our team is already super interested in Film-making and photography so none of the money raised will be used to buy film equipment. Some of the charities our team would like to donate to can be found below:
We will create 5 documentary-style videos that follow our daily activities on the trip. We will also be creating some behind the scenes videos and something that we want to call "RoughKiwi Visuals" videos that showcase New Zealand's beauty.
We intend to interview other kiwis along our route which we will release in short-form to our social media accounts; We will also be creating live videos before, during and after the trip.
Driving 2500km in terrible cars over ten days and filming the entire thing is going to be a challenge. We expect there to be issues along the way which will make the trip an adventure, Our team, however, is extremely confident that we can complete the journey and create entertaining and engaging videos for our community to see!
The main risk for the campaign is that we don't reach our goal. Without this money, we will not be able to complete the trip. We plan to run a flexible campaign and donate the money we get to the charities determined by the communities input.
Our aim is to donate as much money as we can to charity. One way that we plan to do this is to take on sponsors that will help with promotion and funding. We aim to use any money raised from sponsors on the trip, before any community money to maximise the amount of money donated to the charities. We aim to raise this money from the sponsors by selling advertising spots on the cars where companies can place their logos etc. If the companies cant offer us money then we will try to reduce the cost of the trip by incorporating their products or services into the trip in some way.
We are looking for as many sponsors as possible and if you are a company that is interested in sponsor the trip feel free to contact us for information.

We understand that not everyone can afford to pledge money to our cause!
We would love it if you could share our campaign on social media and tell a freind, every little bit helps :)
