Short Summary

Imagine you could spend one day with your dog as a human being. Imagine having a chance to chat together, laugh together. Now imagine if such a miracle were to happen on your dog’s last day on this earth with you. What would he or she look like, what would their voice sound like? What would they tell you if they had the chance, and what would you tell them if you two could speak the same language? What would all the love and affection you shared for a lifetime sound and look like? One thing’s for sure: you’d make sure to give them their best last day on earth.

"One of the best short film stories I've seen in a long time"

David Thompson (Billy Elliot, The First Grader)

The Writer/Producer's Statement

The Last Day On Earth is a short film that conveys empathy, laughter and nostalgia under the bright light of comedy, and aims to leave its audience smiling with a watery eye, just enough to feel that magic warmth in their heart.

The empathy comes as soon as we’re able to identify with Mark’s insecurities, which at some point we all go through in our life. Why are we here? Are we living the right way? Is there even a right way? Are we missing anything? Are we being meaningful? Sometimes these questions just pop up in front of us, and at some point, we must face our doubts, but we also have to cut ourselves some slack. At times, even allowing us to have doubts is enough – it makes us human. But we also must not forget what we’re here for: living. And just feeling alive. The laughter comes from a wholly atypical and funny situation that shows us what a dog would do in our shoes (more or less literally) and lets us dive into the fantasy of witnessing that with our own eyes, imagining all of a dog’s manners within a human being, and then putting this being in a social context, but completely unaware of our very human social constructs, and of whatever society demands or expects from us.

Nostalgia catches us off guard after a bunch of moments of lightheartedness. Laughing leaves place to smiling softly in front of a goodbye scene. The feeling of nostalgia is not a negative thing, but it’s not easy to digest either. It’s the perfect mixture of happiness and sadness that leaves a very bittersweet aftertaste in our mouth. As much as nostalgia is usually triggered by memories from the past and the longing to get back to that time-space, it would also be quite simplistic to define it that way only. Looking at the bigger picture, we realize that we can define this feeling more widely as “the memory of happiness itself”. At the end of the day, that’s what we’re all looking for, what gives us comfort when we realize it’s right there next to us without the need of looking further, what gives us that resting smile on our faces: happiness.

This twenty-minute magical ride of a journey that is Mark and Doug’s invites us all aboard, ready to gift us with a new, unique perspective on joy and cheerfulness through our heroes’ journey on our own, very personal pursuit of happiness.

Meet the Team

Luna Ranieri- Writer/Producer

It all started when she packed her suitcase with a load of dreams and took the plane to London. Born and raised in Italy, Luna comes from a background in photography and visual arts, and that is how she was initiated to the Seventh Art, filmmaking. She began her research in storytelling as a conceptual photographer, so the image was always the core of her work. But then, as her stories got bigger and the frame too still, she pushed her boundaries and pursued cinema, going from an image frozen in time to the motion picture that moves through it. “What I know since the age of 7, is that I’ve always wanted to create something. I’ve always wanted to tell a story, my story, everyone’s story. I want to make something that stays when I’m gone. I want to make films.”

Federico E. Cornacchia- Director

Federico Emilio Cornacchia, is an award winning Italo-Romanian Film Director Cornacchia was born and raised in Altamura, a town of Apulia in Southern Italy. He shares his name, his dreams and his destiny with another Federico, the great Fellini.
Our Federico developed a profound interest in his surroundings, attempting to discover and comprehend the psychological and existential foundation and reasoning behind his own perceptions and the external factors that formed and shaped his reality. For him, creating with the intention of demolishing the conventional idea of what we perceive as reality and instead integrating imaginary and challenging concepts is essential. His filmmaking is highly appreciated by critics in consideration of his distinct visual aesthetic and conceptual approach that he establishes in each project.

The writing process: a four-hands concerto

I met Scott during my master’s. He’s truly a genuine soul that I instinctively trusted. One night I approached him with the story of The Last Day On Earth. He saw it all, immediately. What Scott did next was astonishing: he took me by the hand and showed me the whole world behind this story. He showed me Mark heading home with his pizza box, his head bursting with thoughts. He showed me Doug, this puppy-at-heart golden retriever whose generosity and loyalty could carry the weight of the world. He showed me these two souls breaching the barrier of time and burning their friendship into existence in a forever that transcends the rules of reality.
It was beautiful to see, but it was a lot to handle. So, Scott stayed next to me the whole time, and together we explored everything, as the very first two witnesses of a story we can’t wait to show you too.

WHY THIS FILM
This is a story of life, death, love and hope.
This story speaks to everybody: adults, children, dog lovers, loners, dreamers. The meaning to our “being human” is given by the very search of our path in life, on our way to the pursuit of our personal happiness. To quote the great Christopher Vogler, “stories are just the reflection of our lifelong search for meaning”, and this film aims to tell the story of a journey we are facing altogether, making us feel the bond we ultimately share as humans as it burns in all our hearts.

YOUR CONTRIBUTION MEANS THE WORLD
To us, to this project, to make the dream see the light of day.
By contributing, not only will you help us making something special for you,
but you’ll also help a whole crew made of dreamers and believers
that want to make one of the few things time cannot erase: films.
