Join us by backing our campaign and help make this passion project a reality!
The Loophole is over a decade in the making. Our co-director and writer Amanda Ann-Min Wong wrote the script back in university at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) in 2014. Our lead actor, co-director, and producer, Annabelle Loi came across The Loophole as a volunteer actor for a directing class that workshopped The Loophole script. Annabelle immediately fell in love with the story, but unfortunately, Amanda had no intention of filming the story in the foreseeable future. A decade later (2024), unable to forget about the story, Annabelle approached Amanda about finally bringing the screenplay to life.
The Loophole is an Asian-Canadian story based in Vancouver. Both directors are from immigrant families, and with that comes a certain conservatism and avoidance of topics like sex, especially when it comes to religious families. We wanted to create a story that was much more open about these topics, and the intersectionality of the two stereotypically conservative groups. We feel this story connects with not only the asian community, but anyone who struggles with the sacrifices of a variety of relationships - parental, religious, or romantic, what it takes to make it work, and what you’re willing to give up for the idea of love.
Synopsis
A young Chinese-Malaysian Canadian woman with a pastor father is about to leave for Waterloo University in the fall, and fears her boyfriend may break up with her due to the long distance, if she doesn’t further develop their physical relationship. As a result, she attempts to use a sexual loophole to keep him interested, despite her belief of sexual abstinence before marriage.

The purpose of this campaign is to raise $10,500 for production.
We aim to submit the film to numerous film festivals, both international and local, with hopes of generating funding and accolades for future projects.
This film is being made independently, meaning it is fully self-funded, so we can’t stress enough that all contributions matter!
55% - will go towards location rentals, design costs, creative supplies (wardrobe, makeup, essential props), and post-production costs.
30% - will be set aside for catering and craft services on set. We want to make sure our cast and crew are being fed healthy and energizing food as our shoot days may have long hours. Our crew will require their energy and strength. We also would like to avoid feeding them pizza and pop every day as they are donating their time, skills, and effort to this passion project of ours!
10% - will go towards saving for legal and clearances. To guarantee that our cast, crew, and locations are protected, we will invest in camera, worker, and location insurances.
5% - of funds will be held for manufacturing costs. This includes any production costs for perks and international shipping fees.
STRETCH GOAL
$25,000 – After setting aside funds for locations, insurance, props, costumes, and food, this will allow us to pay our creative team honorariums, or dare we hope, full wages? This will also contribute to our private screening and film festival submissions when the film is complete.
Our campaign offers perks for you to get involved via producer credits, seeing your name on screen as a thank you, or be an extra if you’re in the area! Other perks include prop replicas, tickets to a private screening once the film is complete, and gifts from generous sponsors. There is something for everyone!
*All perks with a value of $100 and up is inclusive of a Special Thanks credit in the film
If you can contribute or purchase a perk, thank you! Independent filmmaking wouldn’t exist without people like you.
If you can’t contribute, there are other ways you can still help us out. Spread the word by sharing this campaign on social media or to anybody who is willing to listen!
