Grand Master Michael L. Burke, 6th dan and founder of the American Style Nunchaku.
Michael started his Martial arts training back in the summer of 1973 at the American Karate Academies in Richmond Va. He won his first tournament 3 months later, the Virginia State Karate Championships in Springfield Virginia. During his training, he developed many different Nunchaku techniques which worked very well in tournament competitions, winning him 3 more state championships and many other tournament victories, throughout the years.
Then in 1990, on a budget of 1,800 dollars, Michael did a VHS tape called the CHAKUS video, on that tape he taught his basic and advanced Nunchaku techniques. These were techniques that he developed during his time in the martial arts.
Over the years, these techniques along with many newer techniques that developed helped created the American Style Nunchaku.
The film will show the journey, two brothers from Richmond Virginia, Mike and Tom Burke, setting out to make a instructional nunchaku tape with little money and no idea on what they were doing.
"I remember after receiving orders from the Asian World of Martial arts in Philadelphia, we would shrink wrap the tapes in our toaster oven. We would glue stickers on the cartons and ship them out hoping they wouldn't come back", says Michael
"During our first filming, we had no money for a set so we use a hair salon set which was left over from another shoot and use a 30.00 smoke machine", says Tom.
The film will be funny and entertaining and full of Nunchaku action.
Today, the style has 9 DVDS out and the material is being used by students form all over the world.
