Our Story

The Midwest Minstrel Company is a non-profit corporation created by a group of energetic singers and facilitators who believe in the healing qualities of music.  The mission of the non-profit is to send musicians into schools, nursing homes and shelters to entertain and educate groups of people who do not have transportation or the physical ability to attend live musical performances.  The Midwest Minstrels will offer a series of "Art From The Heart" concerts - which are free events to the public to promote the non-profit organization and the mission behind it.

The Midwest Minstrel Company was inspired by the great work of Tim McHale and his Boston Minstrel Company -- an original troupe of singers and musicians who have produced musical programs for the homeless, elderly and imprisoned throughout the greater Boston metro area for over the past 20 years.

The key objective is to motivate individuals in the audience to join in by clapping and singing as the music moves them to do so. As audience members become involved in the music, it transforms entertainment into expressive therapy. Repeating such moments in a community can impact lives in lasting ways.

As of June 1st participating musicians include Peter Phippen, Brian Bethke, Cynthia Chitko, Colleen Hannifin, Brian Schellinger and Neal A. Topliff. The first "Art From The Heart" concert will be August 19th at the Oxford Theatre in Eau Claire, Wisconsin starting at 7 p.m.

The Impact

The Midwest Minstrels believe that musical connections can transform a group from ordinary to extra-ordinary within minutes.  Music is an ice-breaker, a stress-reliever, a creative outlet, and it has a way of “empowering” individuals and groups.

The Midwest Minstrels will generate group interaction through "Art From The Heart" concerts at community theaters, celebrations, corporate events, retreats, seminars, and gatherings.

What We Need & What You Get

The funding will be used to send musicians into schools, shelters, nursing homes and prisons to entertain and educate.  The biggest expense is the cost of transportation.  The funding will also be used to launch the concert series designed to draw attention to the non-profit and the mission behind it. Budget line items include renting the performance space, sound and lighting systems as well as advertising the concert series.

Depending on the level of donation - donors will receive Peter Phippen or Brian Bethke music CDs, "Art from the Heart" T-shirts,  VIP seating at concerts and The Midwest Minstrels to perform at your event (within reasonable driving distance of Eau Claire, Wisconsin).
