The Mob Kings is a genre bending modern tale adapted from an indie book series, titled, Alfonzo. This coming of age story begins with young Latino from the inner city, attempting to clean up his act. He's doing that, until a double homicide of his beloved Uncle and new bride opens a Pandora's Box of lies. The father who the young man believed had died is alive -but not for long. The Old Man has a confession to make. He's bequeathed a mafia empire to his son and that isn't all, the murders were related.
Family dysfunction, love, lies and drama -you get that plus more. We might not have an obscene budget, endless car chases and ear shattering explosions. What we do have in our independent short film, The Mob Kings is a modern mob story with a killer plot.
THE BACK STORY ON THE MOB KINGS
The Mob Kings is adapted from the novel, Alfonzo by S. W. Frank (Pen Name) Sandra Franklin is also a Screenwriter and Producer on The Mob Kings, which was originally titled "Los Locos Azules" . The tale begins with a young woman, named Selange, who meets a young man, Alfonzo, under tragic circumstances. That first book written nearly twenty years ago is currently a 24 book series since the date of this publication. The drama has reached the top of online e-book charts on amazon and has a cult following . The series has received praise for its raw and unapologetic prose in The Guardian. An independent author embarked on a journey to tell an epic story of loyalty, betrayal and redemption. That indie spirit and creative tenacity is exactly what the cast and crew are bringing to The Mob Kings' project. The brooding and charismatic Alfonzo, the cold-blooded enforcer Nico, Sophie, the Sicilan Matriach, Alfonzo's mother Maria, a devout Catholic and the entire family are all such vibrant characters, that we are dedicated to bringing their story to life. Hello! We are mother and daughter filmmakers who are passionate about inclusion in film and great storytelling.The Mob Kings is that and more-it's a coming of age story that includes the angst of life's uncertainty, strength in the face of adversity, family and love . My name is Sandra Franklin, screenwriter of The Mob Kings and the mother half. The Mob Kings is an adaption of my book, entitled Alfonzo, written years ago. Back then, the lack of diversity in films was glaringly evident. I decided to write and include those people in one of my favorite genres. That passion about writing stories with inclusion has never waned.
Hi, I'm Brittany Franklin, the Director and daughter half. Let me first say, thank you in advance for taking the time to check out our IndieGoGo Campaign. This film is truly a labor of love and our strong belief in the tale. I am a recent New York Film Academy graduate. I have collaborated with other filmmakers on amazing projects, one of which recently made its debut in the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner 2017 marketplace. This story has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember; it is a book which continues to resonate with me whenever I am faced with any adversity. Alfonzo's strength, Selange's self-reliance and the realistic conflicts in this coming of age tale, made me believe, there isn't anything I can't overcome. Now, it's time to make this book a movie!
The Mob Kings Brings More Diversity to Film
Independent films such as The Mob Kings, add a story with diversity which is lacking in mainstream cinema. Multi-ethnic characters such as Alfonzo who is of Puerto-Rican and Sicilian descent along with female leads, represent an authenticity to the tale which takes place in one of the most diverse cultural cities in the world -New York.
Presently, the majority of films in the U.S., have lead characters that are over 73% white or white actors in ethnic roles. We're seeking to add our perspective and utilize actors which are closely aligned with the characters. A woman Director has a vision and with the help of talented people, we're making a contemporary mob tale that is long overdue.
