For millions of children and adults, the Nickelodeon Network is synonymous with growing up. In just a few years, the channel grew from a small local channel to an international phenomenon that helped shape a generation. Led by Geraldine Laybourne, the visionary who turned the company into an $8 billion juggernaut. But what was the whole story?
The Orange Years journeys behind the scenes of the “kids first” phenomenonal programming to chronicle the unprecedented success of Nickelodeon, straight from the mouths of those who brought the classic shows to us as children. Filled with interviews from the actors, writers, animators, and creators from all your favorite golden age Nick shows, the film offers a new perspective on Nickelodeon, from the humble origins of the channel deep into the SNICK years.
More than just a history lesson or a “where are they now?” special, the documentary explores the network’s revolutionary approach to storytelling, the impact it had on a generation of youth, and aims to find out of why these shows have stayed in the hearts of so many people.

The Orange Years is being made almost entirely by two individuals, Scott Barber and Adam Sweeney (affectionately known as the company Sonic Reducer). With Adam’s strong background in journalism and marketing, Scott’s experience behind the camera and as an editor, and our mutual experience as screenwriters, we have the ability and resources to do most of the work on this film ourselves. We also have most of the equipment we will need to make a really sharp looking film. However, there are still a few things we do need money for to make The Orange Years a reality, and that’s why we’re coming to you.

TRAVEL - One of the biggest costs we will have is travel. Since these golden age Nick actors and creators we know you will want to see live all over America, and some in Canada, we are going to be on the road a lot. We’re going to operate on a shoestring budget and run with a skeleton crew, which will provide an affordable budget, but there are still many interviews we need to get, and many miles to cover.
COPYRIGHT & LEGAL FEES: Another big expense for a documentary comes in copyright and legal fees. We want to make sure we make this film the right way from the start and that means we will make sure all footage and images used from classic Nickelodeon shows is done legally and respectfully.
MARKETING - One of the greatest determining factors in the success of a movie is how well it’s marketed to audiences. Our team has created marketing and social media strategies for companies like iHeartMedia, the Alamo Drafthouse, and various non-profit organizations, so we have the knowledge and drive to get The Orange Years out to all the Nick Fans who want to see it!
FOOD – Our crew and interviewees can’t work on an empty stomach, so we want to be able to provide healthy and nourishing meals throughout the production days as a way to make sure they’re taken care of.
