The Pride
Have you ever been sick of being misrepresented? Of having no one like you to look up to? Have you ever wanted to change everything?
Well, FabMan has. In a world populated by superpowers, the superhero is common. Sadly for FabMan (Tomorrow’s Fabulous Man, Today), he feels a deep schism in the representation of his community, his own heroic exploits being presented as just big jokes in the news. Wan...ting to fight for change, he forms PRIDE, the world’s premier LGBT supergroup. Not a gay superteam, just a team where most members are LGBT. Not exactly receiving the desired response, the group faces opposition from the confrontational Justice Division, more aggressive misrepresentation by the media and are then taken advantage of in the plans of the nefarious Reverend. After a serious trial by fire, the team find themselves the only super team in the world capable of stopping The Reverend’s diabolical plot for world domination.
Join FabMan, Wolf, Sapphire, Frost, Twink, Bear, Angel and White Trash on their mission to help people and improve LGBT representation in the process.
The Pride is a six-issue mini-series written by Joe Glass, and with art by rising star Gavin MItchell, and Kris Carter. The series will be published by Deadstar Publishing, and is seeking further distribution.
Our Story
I'm Joe Glass, and I'm a gay man who loves comics. Luckily, I also happen to be a writer.
When I was growing up, and coming to terms with my sexuality, one of the things I always felt sad about was the fact there were no visible, openly gay superheroes I could relate to. Sure, there were one or two, but they lived in the background or were poorly reresented. Ever since then, I wanted to change that. And that's what The Pride is all about.
Taking me many years to work out the story, let the characters grow an evolve in my head, and the most important part of finding a great artist; we are finally ready to bring this project out into the world.
Helping me I have the fantastic new artist Gavin Mitchell, who provides the excellent artwork on the series. Kris Carter brings that art to life with his glorious colours. A host of other artists are providing one page stories nd covers for the series too. And Deadstar Publishing are helping me to brin it to a wider audience than I could by myself. But as new creators, we could always use more help to get this comic out even further.
The Impact
The whole point of doing this project is to provide young LGBT comics readers with heroes they can look up to, and older ones with heroes they can relate to; it's to cover issues that straight readers may not be aware of, or may have disregarded as something which 'doesn't affect them' when they affect all of us; it can hopefully change some opinions and help push for an improvement in representation; and most of all, it will be fun!
If we are unsuccessful here, the comic will still come out. But we won't be able to spread it as far as we would like, and there is little point to a message if no one can actually hear it.
What We Need & What You Get
The money raised by this project will be used to pay for printing larger print runs of this comic that I can distribute personally, or through stores who order the book too. Furthermore, each donation can be used as a kind of 'pre-order' that we can show larger distributors like Diamond the kind of numbers we can achieve, so hopefully they will work with us to help distribute the comic as far and wide as possible. The other benefit of the poject being on this site is that it's the best way to get your copy if you live in the United States or outside of the UK. As yet, we are working on distribution deals in those territories, but we're not there yet. So your help will let us spread this message globally. Higher print runs and perorder numbers are of course also possible even if we don't hit the ultimate target, but the more we raise the better.
In fact, if we beat the target, then it just means we can print more, market more, and maybe even commission more artists to provide their help in the series. Anything to make this project as big and great as it can be!
Other Ways You Can Help
Even if you can't help fund the series, you can help spread the word! There are links to the comics Facebook and twitter pages, and I'll keep this project updated on any and all news on the comic, so you can keep helping by passing that info on to anyone you know and encouraging them to help us. Thank You!
