My name is Ryan Drescher, and I am trying to fund an independent, science fiction thriller web series that will consist of ten, ten minutes episodes. I am in my
fifth and final year at the University of Calgary. I have been writing short
stories and novel length projects for ten years and have recently entered the
film industry.
The Quieting series is based on a short
story I wrote, set in the middle of a conflict between the government (the
Coalition) and the rebel anarchists of a dystopic future world. The Coalition
has been forced to live in underground shelters by the rebels, known to the
Coalition as shaggies, who now inhabit the war-torn surface. John, a die-hard supporter of the Coalition
and low-level security guard, is scheduled to be on shift for the most
dangerous night of the year, the Quieting. The orders, however, are ones he has
never had before, and ones he will never get again. His friendship with his superior officer,
Aaron, will be put to the test when their different beliefs come to light.
Meanwhile Victoria and Lisa, two authority figures within the Coalition, try to contain the slowly unraveling truths about their questionable actions. The series will end with the
catastrophic Quieting, a culling of the population below ground in the Hollow.
With your support we can make this series phenomenal.
Currently, everyone involved in the process is a student, and so money to
complete such a project is scarce. While we have the people required to make
this work, your funding is the last bridge that will help us get our exciting
story to you!
We are hoping to raise $10,000 to create
this project. Of that, $3,000 will go towards paying actors and technical help.
The rest of the funds will go towards paying for our building props and, if we
receive enough, renting a sound stage for the more complex scenes. We will also
use funding for the rental or purchase of equipment we are missing (primarily
different camera lenses and sound equipment).
There are a large number of perks available
to donators, including everything from behind the scenes images and videos to
coming on set as a secondary character and access to the inner workings of the
production process.
If we don't reach our goal, we will still
create the series using the funds received. The closer to our goal we get, the
better quality series you will get to see! Your contribution makes the
difference between a high quality product and something mediocre. Our story is
one that we would like to share with the world, and one that we know people
will enjoy.
This is not the first time I have lead a
project like this. I was the Director and one of the writers for Front Lines, a
short film that screened in the film anthology Whatcha Got Calgary at the Globe
Cinema last autumn. I have worked previously as the:
- Associate
Producers for NUTV's Studio 315*
- Writer and director of Risk and Reward*
- Director of the University of Calgary's
superhero drama Awake*
- Director of Photography of the cooking show Bite Me*
There are a couple of major challenges that
will be presented to us in the production of this series. The first one is
location. With a setting that is entirely underground, we will have to work
hard and travel frequently to find new and interesting locations to keep the
Hollow of the Coalition from becoming too repetitive. A sound stage will allow us
to manipulate backdrops and rooms to be unique while still having the same
feeling. Another challenge will be
authentic looking props. While both of these challenges will be best handled
with proper funding, we plan to work hard in the art department to make sure
that, regardless of funding, we will be able to produce believable props.
Not everyone is able to contribute money,
and we understand that. That doesn't mean you can't still help us reach our
goal though! Spread the world, talk to your friends, and use the Indiegogo
share tools to get the word out!
