What is The Reprobate?
Too impatient to read all this? Click below to check out the 88-page issue 0 now.
The
Reprobate is a grown-up (though not
necessarily mature) reading alternative for the reader who has put aside childish
things but who retains the elements of the rascal, the miscreant, the cad, the
bounder, the quaintrelle, the loafer… the reprobate. The person who may have
developed finer (or possible lower) tastes in all things, yet who has not yet
submitted to tedious conformity. The malcontent who knows that the good life
always needs a decidedly bad side.
The
Reprobate is the magazine for ladies and
gentlemen of leisure... the decadent elite who are so far ahead of modern
trends that they have gone full circle and are now bringing up the rear. It’s
for those who believe in minimum effort for maximum reward, who feel an
Englishman’s home is his castle (or his castle, his home) and that a life
devoid of risk is a life devoid of pleasure... and that pleasure is the only
thing in life that really matters.

So
we are aiming our magazine at the modern contrarian. The lady or gentlemen who
knows that style and fashion are very distinct things, with only the former
being important. The lover of the esoteric and the arcane. The nostalgist who
is not blindly tethered to the past. The admirer of beauty and grotesquery. The
sort of person who simply can’t resist tweaking the nose of convention and who
cares not one jot for perceived wisdom. The person who believes that physical
activity is to be avoided whenever possible, and who believes that too much is
never enough. The person who sees government drinking guidelines as a bare
minimum and health warnings as a recommendation. The person who likes to take
up a contrary opinion just for the hell of it. The sort of person who comes
with a trigger warning. The decadent, the freethinker, the rebel, the nuisance
and the iconoclast for whom a ‘safe space’ is anathema.

The
Reprobate is designed to provoke thought
and discussion amongst those content with neither the status quo nor
Status Quo. We appreciate art, style, manners, insight and outbursts - we, like
yourselves, recognise a tattered paperback as an illuminated grimoire; an
unsold 1950’s seven inch single as the melodic hymn from the unloved dead; a
conversation beginning with, “I
probably shouldn’t tell you this”, as
pure-spun gold.
Who We Are and What We Plan
Each edition of The Reprobate will be at least 88 pages (if we have more ads, we print more pages),
printed on high quality matte stock in full colour. We plan to publish
quarterly, with supplements and offshoots along the way. The print magazine is
backed by the website, which features extensive and exclusive reviews, news and
galleries, and our social media pages on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, where
we will share updates, opinion and inspiration.
And we have big ambitions – as well as the magazine, we will
be launching a podcast ands online radio show, live video broadcasts and Reprobate
events over the next 12 months.
The Reprobate is edited by David Flint, formerly editor /
publisher of Divinity, Sheer Filth and Headpress magazines, and an experienced
journalist and cultural historian, who has contributed to magazines Penthouse,
Loaded, Bizarre, Skin Two, Rapid Eye, Flesh and Blood, Knave, Sky Magazine and
many more.

What We Need
As a new launch, The Reprobate has little money and lots of
ambition. We have the ways and means to
publish the magazine one way or another – so any backers can rest assured that
they will get what they have paid for – but we would like to do this properly.
We want to raise enough money initially to ensure that we can do a decent print
run of the magazine, enabling us to distribute to shops and suppliers across
the UK and the world.
We also want to place the magazine on a sound financial
footing, ensuring that we can continue and expand with future issues.
Beyond that, if the campaign is successful enough, we badly need to upgrade our equipment – issue
0 has been produced on a Mac that has seen better days.
And last, but not least, we want to pay our contributors.
Too many magazines – online and offline – treat struggling writers, artists and
photographers with contempt by not paying them. We want everyone involved in
the production of The Reprobate to at least be paid something, and for that
something to increase as the magazine takes off.
Our Perks
We like to think of this as pre-ordering, rather than asking for something for nothing. But we have a variety of offers available, including advertising space and merchandise. We'll be adding more perks as we go along - and we will have
Reprobate goodies available on the website soon.

Risks & Challenges
Our goal is to raise enough support for The Reprobate to be
able to reach as wide an audience as possible, for us to pay our contributors and
for the magazine to have a sound footing on which to develop. By building a strong subscriber case, we can
ensure that the magazine is able to develop and expand, hitting shops and creating more
awareness.
If things don't quite work out that way, then rest assured that there will be a magazine, somehow or other. We promise to keep you in touch with developments and changes, and we won't be spending any of your money without consulting you if things change significantly from the current plan.
Other Ways You Can Help
Hey, times are hard. We know that. But if you can't help us out with pre-orders, you can still show your support for this project by plugging the hell out of us on social media, websites or while annoying people down the pub. The more publicity we can get, the better our chances.
And feel free to plug the website and point people towards issue 0. Thank you and goodnight.
