The SEA Is Ours: Tales of Steampunk Southeast Asia is an anthology of short stories and art. It is exactly what it says on the tin--it has:

SOUTHEAST ASIA!

Southeast Asia is the lesser-known Asia, the Asia confused with other Asias. Some know us by our typhoons and tsunamis, as the land where refugees and cheap labor come from, or as the sad, downtrodden, Third World region where Westerners go for their exotica and sex tourism.

Southeast Asia is a rapidly modernizing region, home to unique flora, fauna, cultures with long histories of towering civilizations, and peoples picking ourselves up in the wake of imperialism. Southeast Asia is a place of far flung dreams, rising metropolises, high-end technology, and myriad languages. Each Southeast Asian country has its unique history and treasures.

STEAMPUNK!

Commonly assumed to be "Victorian Science Fiction," our fancy steampunk recipe combines alternate history, technofantasy, and retrofuturism.

THE BOOK

Twelve stories that reimagine Southeast Asia through a steampunk lens—or perhaps, stories that reimagine steampunk'd fantastic technology and potential histories through a Southeast Asian lens. You decide! These are tales of Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and Vietnam by writers all over the world.

Here you will find dreams of revolution, acts of resistance, and lives, loss, and loves played out in high and low places. Aswang! Boat People! Clockwork revenge! Dragons! Spider fighting! Volcanoes! And the requisite explosions galore!

THE TABLE OF CONTENTS

"On The Consequence of Sound" - Timothy Dimacali
"Chasing Volcanoes" - Marilag Angway
"Ordained" - L. L. Hill
"The Last Aswang" - Alessa Hinlo
"Life Under Glass" - Nghi Vo
"Between Severed Souls" - Paolo Chikiamco
"The Unmaking of the Cuadro Amoroso" - Kate Osias
"Working Woman" - Olivia Ho
"Spider Here" - Robert Liow
"The Chamber of Souls" - zm quỳnh

These are the voices of the unheard, singing the songs of the unsung. Only a few have ever been published in the West—indeed, some have never been published before! Each story will be accompanied by an illustration by an equally talented artist.

The SEA Is Ours will be released November 1, 2015 from Rosarium Publishing, distributed by IPG.

$9000 Teachers' Edition of the Anthology!

Your humble editors are also educators, and we will put together a teacher's edition with author interviews, activities, and discussion questions that you can use to help your students on their journey of learning. If we hit this stretch goal, backers who give $30 will receive a PDF download of the teacher's edition.

$14,000 Help Fund the Next One!

A single anthology can't possibly encapsulate the vast diversity of Southeast Asia! There are SO many countries, and SO many kinds of peoples, and we would like to continue showing off our beautiful region to you!

The Authors

Marilag Angway prefers her steampunk to take place in the skies as often as possible, though is not opposed to a good romp on terra firma. Her stories can be found in various anthologies, including those published by Bards and Sages Publishing, Hadley Rille Books, Deepwood Publishing, and Ticonderoga Publications. For her random book and overall nerdish musings, check out her blog: http://storyandsomnomancy.wordpress.com/. Don’t forget to grab a cookie and a cup of tea on your way out!

Paolo Chikiamco is a Manila-based Filipino writer whose has edited Alternative Alamat (an anthology of stories that reimagine Philippine mythology) and Kwentillion (a young adult-focused comics magazine). His fiction has been published in such venues as Scheherazade’s Façade, Philippine Genre Stories, Steampunk III: Steampunk Revolution, Lauriat, and The Philippine Speculative Fiction series. He has also written comics such as High Society, Mythspace (a series which uses Philippine folklore as the basis for a space opera tale), as well as an interactive wrestling novel for Choice of Games called Slammed! (choiceofgames.com/slammed/) Find him on Twitter as @anitero.

Timothy James M. Dimacali is a Filipino science fiction author and the Science and Technology Editor of a major Philippine media network. His short fiction “Skygypsies” is required reading in some Philippine high school and college English classes and has since been adapted into a comic book (available for free at Flipreads.com). L.L. Hill’s fiction has appeared in the Third Flatiron anthology, Playing with Fire (Pushcart nomination), Domain SF, Hello Horror, and elsewhere. Her first Steampunk piece, the inspiration for “Ordained,” came from Phu Phra Bat National Historic Park and the adjacent Mekong River area of Nong Khai which she visited in October 2012. www.lauraleehill.com

Alessa Hinlo writes fiction that spans the thriller, fantasy, and horror genres. Born in the Philippines and raised in Northern Virginia, she’s most interested in stories that reflect the push and pull of conflicting cultures and feature people who fall into the spaces between. Her other interests include vegetable gardening, crafting, and yoga. She tweets regularly at @alessahinlo.

Olivia Ho is a writer born and based in Singapore. She owes the inspiration for her work to her parents—her mother, who taught her how to love the history of her island, and her father, whose idea of steampunk is “KILLER ROBOT SAMSUI WOMEN.” Besides writing, her other random talents include Arabic bellydance, stage management, and knitting, and perhaps one day all three at the same time.

Robert Liow, also known as Robert Bivouac, is a Chinese-Malaysian writer currently living in Singapore. An advocate for racial justice and diversity in media, he has appeared in the inaugural Singapore Poetry Writing Month (“SingPoWriMo”) anthology and several publications by Singapore’s Creative Arts Programme.

Pear Nuallak was born in South London of Bangkokian artists. They studied History of Art jointly with SOAS and UCL (University of London) focusing on Thai Buddhist art, hybridity, globalization, and postcoloniality. They are interested in food, fiction, disruptive domesticity, and textiles. They may be found on a sofa in North London, having opinions while knitting.

Ivanna S. Mendels writes fantasy, science fiction, and steampunk, even children’s picture books. Her Opera Dinosaur book was published in France and another of her Asian steampunk short stories will soon be published in Indonesia. Her steampunk stories are partly influenced by Alfred Russel Wallace’s descriptions of South East Asia in his books. You can follow her on Twitter at @wulfettenoire

Kate Osias has won four Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, the Gig Book Contest, Canvas Story Writing Contest, and the 10th Romeo Forbes Children’s Storywriting Competition. Her works appear in LONTAR: Journal of Southeast Asian Speculative Fiction #1, various Philippine Speculative Fiction anthologies, Horror: Filipino Fiction for Young Adults, Maximum Volume, and the WFC Unconventional Fantasy (2014).

z.m. quỳnh huddles in deep East Oakland in a room tinged with blue, nursing calloused hands worn down from the chronic transcription of restless dreams. past lives have included scattered jaunts through urban minefields with each misstep hinting at a life less easily mapped out by this amateur cartographer. The SEA Is Ours will be quỳnh’s debut in spec fic.

Nghi Vo lives on the shores of Lake Michigan, and her fiction has appeared in Strange Horizons, Expanded Horizons, Crossed Genres, and Icarus Magazine. She likes stories about things that fall through the cracks and live on the edges, and she has a deep love for tales of revolution (personal and political), transfiguration, and transmutation.
