Our team is comprised of young, diverse creatives who care about putting out quality content.
While there are many people offering their talents to our film, allow us to introduce you to a couple of our key roles:
Madelyn Rideout (Writer/Director)
Madelyn Rideout is a recent Concordia graduate with several short films under her belt. Her screenplay for The Sex Act gained her a place as a finalist in the Screencraft 2017 short screenplay competition. She cares deeply about creating female-driven content and cannot wait to begin directing The Sex Act!
Gerardo Alcaine
Originally from El Salvador, Gerardo Alcaine recently graduated from Concordia University and has since been working as the creative director for a local Montreal magazine (fm2) and as a videographer for Productions L'Eloi. He is constantly seeking out projects in which he can work alongside diverse creatives, and continues to push himself to create quality images and video content.
*our cast and crew will be paid out of pocket
Unfortunately there are things that we simply cannot avoid spending money on. Here is a breakdown of what we need and why:
Lighting Rental while we only need several lights and stands for our shoot, lights are darn expensive! Renting lights in order to make our film look its best is the biggest chunk of our budget.
Grip Rental the most boring rental, but the foundation of any film set. Our grip rental includes stands for lighting and sandbags to safely hold those heavy stands in place.
Craft food, glorious food. We need to keep our team fed throughout our shoot!
Wardrobe/Props our film is set in the 1970s, and we need it to look that way. Our art team has been collecting donated vintage items from friends and family, but we are going to need more in order to dress our sizeable cast and set.
Set Rental film sets can be fun and exciting, but also extremely chaotic. Most people do not want them inside their own homes. We have decided to rent a large house to shoot in, a la Airbnb.
Truck Rental we need to get those stands and sandbags around somehow, and Madelyn's dad won't let us use his Honda civic!
In Ontario, Canada, there has been a heated debate on the topic of sex ed amongst educators, parents, and religious leaders. In 2015 a curriculum that hadn't been changed since the 1990s finally got a much needed update. This change to the curriculum was met with backlash and protest, mostly over the introduction of progressive topics, such as the LGBT+ community, gender identity and sexual orientation, and the importance of consent. However, our Ontario government has recently changed, and steps have been taken to roll back the curriculum to its outdated version. Our protagonist, Ellen, dealt with what she believed to be an outdated curriculum in the 1970s. While our short film is funny, timely, and refreshing, the risk of losing an updated sex ed curriculum is not funny. It's easy to leave school and never take a math class again (thank goodness), but regardless of our education, we will continue to live with our sexuality, gender, and evolving bodies and identities for the rest of our lives. Comprehensive sex education allows us to lead healthier lives, both mentally and physically.
We think we have a powerful short film on our hands, and we desperately want to share it with the world. What if we could change the way one person thinks about sex ed? That would be awesome!
