At East Village
Dance Project and GOH Productions we are excited to embark on our second
year of presenting The Shell-Shocked Nut, an alternative East Village
Nutcracker, co-produced and presented by La MaMa Ellen Stewart Theatre on January 2nd, 3rd
and 4th, 2015. Exploring themes of loss and recovery, this dynamic show
features a cast from age 5-65, including 25 talented young dancers and 25 professional performers,
artists, composers and choreographers. We are hoping to raise $5,500 to assist
in covering costs of the production, and would love your support!
The Story
Upending the
classic story of the Nutcracker, the show follows a war veteran and a
wandering child on a journey through iconic and everyday spots in the East
Village – stopping at Tompkins Square Park, Economy Candy Store, the aisles of a
corner bodega, the interior of an East Village apartment and beyond.
The Background
The show was originally conceived in the week after
Superstorm Sandy. It began as an informal studio showing of sections of the Nutcracker
with the students of East Village Dance Project, a non-profit dance development program in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The process of creating a performance with the
students and sharing it with the community provided a chance for release,
celebration and creation of positive energy during a difficult time.
The Collaborators
What started out as an informal showing has now grown into a full-scale production, involving both students and a fabulous team of professional artists The professionals involved in this production come from as close as the East Village community and as far as New Mexico and Thailand! Below are those currently involved in the creation of the show.

We need your help:
The $5,500 we hope
to raise will go towards offsetting our professional artists fees, tech fees, costumes, set
pieces, and covering boarding for out-of-state guest artists.
We have decided not charge any participation or costume fee for the students involved in this production. We are excited to allow these talented young dancers to be a part of a
professional performance without cost, and would like to be able to keep it that
way in years to come!
In exchange for
your generosity, we are offering some awesome perks, including credit in the
program, beautiful hand decorated thank-you cards by some of our young
performers, a chance to see the creative process in action by attending a
rehearsal (and sipping and snacking) and a limited
offer of a complementary class with Martha or Victoria!
Any amount helps
and is enthusiastically accepted! Not able to help out financially? You can
still help by sharing this link with friends and family, and encouraging others
to attend our show this January. We thank you for your support!
