Who is Sativa and what are We Doing?
Sativa Magazine is the flagship publication of Vanguard Click Publishing, whose two-fold purpose is to educate the world about the benefits of Cannabis and to encourage the creation of sustainable jobs in legal, Cannabis-related businesses. Along with its partner publication, Indica Magazine, we carry this message to the community and to the policy makers who are literally writing the future of the Cannabis industry. We speak to the voters, educate the public, and help guide business leaders who are the hope and backbone of this industry.
We want you in our video/commercial. Do you wanna be quasi famous? While we have seen great success from our digital edition of Sativa, the number one question we get from possible advertisers is, "Will you send me a copy?" They want to hold it and experience the magazine first hand. Currently, 70% of our readers are between the ages of 18 and 32. We need to reach the other 30% who prefer to read a physical magazine. Most successful business owners are above the age of 35. Without print, we are not reaching the majority of this demographic.
As the first stepping stone to releasing a print copy of our successful digital edition, we need to share with more of the world who we are and why we matter. To do this, we are raising money through our first campaign to create a video we can share with the world and let more people know who we are. Funds successfully raised in this campaign to create our video will then be used to develop further fundraising through sharing our video and using this message to raise the capital we need to move Sativa and its sister magazine, Indica, to the print format.
Our currently all-volunteer staff, made up primarily of students and underutilized professionals, has worked tirelessly for nearly two years to build this dream. Without them, we would not be where we are today. As one of the leading authorities on the Cannabusiness community, we are well positioned to continue our ongoing efforts of creating positive change and serving to influence decision makers in the industry.
Why Should You Care about Sativa?
We are here to fight for your freedom and unite with others who share our vision. Together, we will be unstoppable. Together, the small business owner and the freedom fighter can have a powerful influence on the future of the Cannabis industry.
Without the insight and education that we provide through the many informative and cutting-edge articles provided by Sativa Magazine, there is little hope of uniting the individual fighting for their rights with the business owners who provide the opportunity for this new economy to exist. As we all know, the most powerful way to make anything ‘here to stay’ is to build an economy around it, tax it, and make it part of our mainstream of goods and services.
So, here’s why YOU should care. You should care because your rights are at stake and we will work tirelessly with business owners, decision makers and industry leaders to keep your rights front and center as our main goal and objective.
How Can You Help?
In order to accomplish our goal of offering Sativa in the more traditional print format, we need your help. We want to cast the widest net possible in reaching both advertisers for revenue and readers who prefer the print edition. With your participation, we intend to create a powerful video that shares with the world who we are, what we have done so far, and where we are going.
Please join us in this effort by either donating to our campaign or helping in one of the other many ways you can participate (in ‘Other Ways You Can Help’ below) to make our vision a reality.
The Impact
At Sativa, we are helping those who have been negatively affected by the war on drugs by educating the public on the realities of Cannabis. We no longer want to see young people being sent to prison for utilizing a plant that is much safer than alcohol or tobacco. As adults, we should be able to make our own choices. The taxpayer cost for incarcerating one person for one year can run as high as $100,000. That’s more than most families’ annual income.
Risks & Challenges
Team Sativa has fought for two years to build street cred and earn the love and respect of the community, positioning us to turn our passion into real jobs. We have an entire staff of extremely hard working team members that have worked for little or no pay simply because they have a passion and common goal to share our message.
While we have previously built this company on fumes, we know it is time for us to get some fuel in our engine and put us solidly in the race. In order to keep offering the invaluable editorial commentary, Sativa (and soon Indica) will continue to rely on advertisers to cover these costs. Without the opportunity to expand our reader base through print, grow our advertising base, and offer a living wage to our employees, we will not be able to successfully continue to grow and keep our current momentum.
Other Ways You Can Help
If donating money and buying perks is not your thing or out of your budget, we can still use your help… Here are a few ways how:
1. Star in Our Video!
Yes, we are making a video… and we want YOU to be in it! If we are going to show new advertisers, readers and business owners how amazing Sativa Magazine is, we are going to need the support of our current digital magazine readers to provide the testimonial.
2. Help Promote Our Campaign
SERIOUSLY?! You don't want to be in the video? You don't want to send a shout out to one of your homies in the digital magazine? Tell your long lost love that you are standing under the same stars thinking about her? Tell your favorite politician that you ____ him? Ok. Fair enough. How about sharing our campaign on your social media or website? Use the ‘share’ links on our Indiegogo campaign to spread the word.
3. Subscribe to Sativa!
Ok, above all, you still have great value to us as one of our loyal readers. Keep up on the latest trends and regulations in the world of Cannabusiness and help broaden our readership and keep Sativa alive!
I'm just saying... it's going to be a lot of fun. This is history in the making. We want you to be a part of it!
Team Sativa
About Michael Carter
Everything in my life has prepared me for this mission. My sister’s name is Sativa. I studied business management, marketing and advertising in college. While I had the good fortune of working in media for a number of years after college, I was frustrated with the economy and was desperately looking for a way to make a positive change. The complete legalization of Cannabis in my home state of Washington came at a perfect time. As this new industry was born, I was more than well positioned to use my extensive media and marketing skills to make real positive change with the creation of Sativa Magazine.
My work building Sativa has taught me to become a better man. My life is no longer just about me; it’s about serving my readers and continuing to support the team I lead as we continue to work to solve the challenges we face every day. We're not giving up. Sativa is here to stay.
Bios and Thoughts from our other Amazing Team Members
Carly:
I joined Team Sativa because I believe in freedom. I think
that is something we have supported openly as a team since day one. Freedom to
me is not working a nine-to-five. As a business student, I've learned what I do
and don't want in a career: I don't want typical and I don't want a day-to-day
robotic lifestyle.
While that works for some people, it doesn't fit my personality; Team Sativa is
my chance. Before I joined, I wasn't sure what I was passionate about (in a
career).
Through our journey I've learned freedom is the base of all my passions. I want to be free enough to make my own decisions as an employee and as a person; I want every human to have a choice to be truly happy. It's beyond legalizing and beyond Cannabis. To me, Team Sativa means making a difference and changing what is "normal."
Diana:
There’s no doubt about it - the end of Pot Prohibition is near. But unlike alcohol, I really do believe Cannabis can heal the nation - financially, socially, mentally and physically. They (the critics) say they have never seen healthier ‘sick’ people than the patients at a Cannabis dispensary, but isn't that the point? In a society where a trip to the hospital can mean debt and where doctors dole out more addictive drugs than do cartel lords, shouldn't we be looking for a less addictive and less expensive alternative?
For these reasons and more, I am proud to be a part of this movement. I am grateful to Sativa Magazine for the opportunity to be able to combine my passion for writing with my participation in this moment in history. And I believe in this magazine’s ability to keep this movement rolling by providing a space for Cannabis enthusiasts to influence, create, advertise, teach, and learn.
Cheri:
I began putting together Sativa Magazine after I had been unceremoniously dumped from my advertising agency job of 12 years as a way of keeping my skills sharp and my anxiety at bay while looking for my next gig. Little did I know that I was to become part of the nationwide glob of love that is now Team Sativa. Although most of the team has never met face-to-face, we exist in a virtual Google office building that is more like the cover of Music from Big Pink by The Band than an actual physical space. And we all have unfathomable respect for each other for staying up late and doing the extra draft and getting it right and making it look good. And that respect generates a tremendous amount of love.
So, yes, in the real world I’m back in the advertising business. But I’m not giving up my membership in Team Sativa. It’s the karmic mechanism that keeps my life balanced.
Hippy KK:
Although I am a non-consumer, the role I play in legalizing and legitimizing the Cannabis industry is personal.
At the young age of 33, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy in the summer of 77; I was 10 years old. The day before I was to start fifth grade, she left for Houston, Texas to begin her in-patient cancer treatment at the world famous, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. During that time, she began consuming Cannabis to relieve her pain. It would be over seven months before I saw my mom again, and 11 months before she would return home. Days after her homecoming, my mom turned 34 years old, eight days later, she passed away.
I have no doubt that the death of my mother altered the path my life would take. Although I don't consume Cannabis, I support those who do without passing a word of judgment. Working for Sativa Magazine has given me the ability to use my voice and make a difference in ending prohibition and bring awareness to others.
Gloria:
I am a part of Team Sativa because I have an unfaltering belief in the unlimited possibilities of the Cannabis plant. I am convinced that full legalization will play a huge part in turning around our economy and creating new jobs in an industry that is yet to realize its full potential. The medicinal and healing qualities of this marvelous and God-given plant are profoundly promising. I am proud to be one of the dedicated people of Team Sativa who work tirelessly to bring reliable information, fresh ideas and proven tools for ganjapreneurs to utilize to realize success in their Cannabis-related businesses.
I discovered the remarkable medicinal value of Cannabis at a very young age. By the time I was 12 years old I was suffering from a whopping case of PTSD, decades before it was even being diagnosed as such, due to multiple, unrelated, horrific life-altering experiences.
Filled with a rage that could not be tempered, I was 13 when I found the solution to my ailment in Cannabis. I was once again able to sleep at night and completed high school with a 4.0 GPA and I no longer carried the rage I once had. If I had not discovered this miraculous plant I doubt I would be here today, healed and whole and passionate about helping others to benefit from this magic and powerful herb.
Josh:
I've been working at Sativa Magazine since its beginning. Since its inception, the magazine has gone through ups and downs. Some team members have left, while others have persevered and stayed the course. Through it all, what I have enjoyed is the common thread that binds this hardworking group of people together and the passion we share for Cannabis, a plant that carries the promise of curing various diseases and boosting our anemic economy. Like the others on our team, I look forward to the day when Cannabis also fuel our cars and heat our homes.
Want to know about the changing political climate of Cannabis? Check out Sativa Magazine. Want to learn about Cannabis stocks that you can invest in today? Check out Sativa Magazine. I could go on, but it would probably just be easier for you to read Sativa Magazine. With more states adopting legalization laws it’s evident that change is in the wind. It won’t happen overnight, but I truly believe it is coming soon and Sativa Magazine will be a part of that process. I am honored to be a part of it.
Kandy:
After I had kidney cancer when I was 14, they told me that it would most likely metastasize to my lungs. Here I am 42 years later and it makes me believe that I'm still here because of the CBDs and the medical properties of Cannabis. I think it assisted me in a bunch of ways.
I began reading Sativa Magazine online when it commenced in 2013. It has helped me to understand how to use this natural medicine in a variety of ways to make living with cancer, just that much easier to deal with.
Writing for Sativa and Indica Magazines gives me the platform to help get the word out to other cancer patients that can benefit from using medical Cannabis. The national reach of these two online publications offers me the opportunity to help other cancer survivors throughout the United States to take a look at this natural form of medicine to help them in their lives. I've always believed in the medicinal properties of Cannabis.
Today I simply want to scream it from the rooftops that everyone ought to try medical Cannabis! We all deserve to have the freedom of choice to help us be as healthy as possible.
Tex:
My first introduction to Sativa Magazine was through an ad posted for a graphic designer to help with a ‘pro-weed’ magazine. I never thought twice about applying and had a great talk with Michael after doing so. While I'm typically not an excitable person and rarely show enthusiasm up front, I felt different from the beginning about the idea of working with Team Sativa.
Once I joined the team, I was particularly engaged in all the brainstorming of ideas (good ideas) being thrown all over the place. We all wanted to pitch in and help to create something great. The communication the team had was not only creative but accomplished in a very unique social way. I liked this and I liked the idea of fighting for something that really should never have had to be fought for in the first place. Ah, if only it were like growing a tomato.
Watching Team Sativa grow and continue to make a great magazine again and again is quite a feeling of accomplishment. My hope is that this magazine continues to flourish and stands strong with a basic set of values that we can all stand behind.
We are excited to have a model where we can feature so many supporters in our
video! Here’s the way it works:
1. Select up to five individual words or sentences from the visual speech below.
We ask you to pick five because we are going to select one of your five based what other people are selecting and which one best works in our video.
2. Create a photograph of you (or you and your friends) with each word or sentence.
You can create this in any creative way you’d like – but we just need to see your lovely face and you holding a board or paper with the word sentence. If you are doing the photo with friends of an entire sentence, maybe each person can hold up a word. Or you can stand in front of a white board featuring the word or sentence. Or street graffiti. But nothing illegal please.
3. Send us the Photos.
Once you have made your donation, we will send you an email reiterating these instructions and include a return email address where you can mail your photos. You can also use this address to share any questions or feedback as well.
We look forward to seeing you!
