Why a Milk Bank in Yorkton?
Many mothers in our region are eager and willing to donate breast milk, but as of right now, there is no local depot for collection. By establishing The Milk Drop right here in Yorkton, we can dramatically increase the amount of milk that mothers in our region can donate.
The Milk Drop will be located at Yorkton Regional Health Centre in the Sunrise Health Region and will collect donations of breast milk from Yorkton and area mothers. The donated milk will be sent to The Calgary Mothers’ Milk Bank for processing, testing, pasteurization and distribution by prescription.
Who Benefits
Babies of course! Particularly babies who are premature or who are at a high risk for gastrointestinal issues. Breastmilk is one of the most effective, and cost effective, ways of caring for these little ones in need.
Our donors are also not just women who have an excessive milk supply. Some women who donate have suffered the devastating loss their own child. When their bodies cruelly produce milk with no baby to feed, these women selflessly choose to pump and donate milk to help other parents' babies in need.
What We Need
We need to raise at least $3,000 to bring a milk depot here to Yorkton. So far, thanks to the generosity of our community, we've raised just over $1,000.
We're setting our campaign goal here for $2,500 to raise enough money to purchase the freezer we need for the depot. We are aiming to raise some extra funds to purchase the processed milk back for babies in need in the Sunrise Health Region.
Funds raised will go through the The Health Foundation and will be eligible for a tax receipt.
